Mustangs win home opener 36-20
The Heppner Mustang
football team won its home
opener of the 2016 sea-
son by defeating the Grant
Union Prospectors by the
score of 36-20 at Les Payne
Field.
The Mustangs started
the game by kicking off,
and after a couple of crazy
bounces, Tim Jaca jumped
on the ball to give Heppner
great field position at the
Prospector 31-yard line.
Just three plays later the
Mustangs scored their first
touchdown when Coby
Dougherty ran it in from
six yards out. Logan Grieb
scored the two-point con-
version to give the Mus-
tangs an 8-0 lead only 35
seconds into the game.
The Heppner defense
then forced a Prospector
punt, which gave them the
ball at their own 39-yard
line. On the very next play
Grieb took the handoff, and
with some great blocking
on the left edge, scampered
down the sideline for a 61-
yard score. Quarterback
Kevin Smith then hit Beau
Wolters with a pass for the
two-point conversion to
make the score 16-0.
Another great defen-
sive stand would give the
Mustangs the ball in good
field position. Just five
plays later, Grieb would
score again as he took the
ball and outran the entire
Prospector defense for a
45-yard touchdown. Smith
threw to Wolters for the
two-point conversion to
give the team a 24-0 lead as
the first quarter ended.
The teams traded pos-

sessions for the rest of the
second quarter until Grant
Union finally scored with
only seconds left. That
made the score 24-6 at
halftime.
On the first drive of the
second half for the Prospec-
tors, Wolters intercepted
a pass and ran it back 67
yards to the five-yard line.
Grieb then took a handoff
and followed his big, strong
offensive line into the end
zone for the score. That
made the score 30-6 with
7:13 left in the third quarter.
Grant Union scored
on their next possession
to make the score 30-12.
The Prospectors forced a
Mustang punt and they got
the ball back. Grieb then
intercepted a pass to give
Heppner the ball at the
Grant Union 43-yard line.
A six-play drive ended with
another Mustang touch-
down when Grieb took a
handoff and rolled to his
left. He found Jake Lindsay
open in the end zone and
threw him an 11-yard pass
that he caught for the score.
That made the it 36-12 as
the fourth quarter of the
game started.
The Prospectors would
put together a long drive to
score their final touchdown
of the game with just over
five minutes left. The next-
to-last possession of game
for Grant Union was halted
when Jaca stepped in front
of a screen pass and inter-
cepted the ball to end the
scoring threat. The teams
traded possessions again
before the game ended with
another victory for the Mus-
tangs by a score of 36-20.
Grieb led the team in
rushing with 192 yards
on 15 carries and scored 3
touchdowns. Dougherty ran
for 48 yards on 13 attempts
and scored a touchdown.
Wolters packed the ball 6
times and gained 12 yards.
Smith was 4-12 passing
the ball for 39 yards and
had 2 passes intercepted.
Grieb was 1-1 passing for
11 yards and a touchdown.
Grieb also caught 2 passes
for 28 yards in the game.
Lindsay had 1 catch for
11 yards and a touchdown.
Wolters also caught 1 ball
for 11 yards.
Kevin Murray had an-
other big game on the de-
fensive side of the ball. The
senior middle linebacker
led the team in tackles with
24 on the night. Jaca record-
ed 14 and Wyatt Steagall
had 11. Trevin Horne fol-
lowed with 9 tackles, while
Kolby Currin and Wolters
each recorded 8. Lindsay,
Dougherty, Peyton Lehm-
an, Gavin Hanna-Robinson
and Jason Rea had 4 tackles
each in the game. Grieb and
Derek Howard were next
with 3 tackles and Dakota
Howard had 2. Smith also
had a tackle in the game.
The next game for
the Mustangs is Thurs-
day night, Sept. 15, when
they travel to Leavenworth,
Washington to take on Cas-
cade High School.
