FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Farra celebrates 99 years and counting 2016 Chronicles on sale next week The 2016 issue of the Morrow County Chroni- cles will go on sale at the Morrow County Fair next Wednesday. They can be purchased at the Morrow County Historical Society’s booth. The price of the publi- cation will again be $7 an issue. Also available at the booth will be past issues of the Chronicles, as well as sets of the historical pub- lications. This year’s Chronicles contains new stories about the county’s persons, places and events from its past. Included in this year’s fea- tures: a shootout in Ione; some teachers important to the Ione school; an 1800s prominent gentleman, JA Nunamaker; Heppner’s first Catholic church; the cre- ation of the scenic Colum- bia Gorge highway; and a “pest house.” Additionally, three small articles from the no-longer-available 1982 and 1983 issues of the Chronicles and an ar- ticle about the new county administrative building will hold interest for readers. This year ’s histori- cal collection is dedicated to George and Lorraine Griffith, for their years of service to our country and in our county. News from Hardman Community Center Unfortunately, the wall- paper at Hardman Commu- nity Center did not get put up on the workday on Aug. 7 due to lack of participa- tion, so this will put wall- papering on the agenda for the Sept. 11 workday, while work on the floors will be moved into October. Claudia Smythe did get the four unstained tables stained with one coat of sealer on them, says she will do more if needed. Three of the other tables Isa and Maya Payne made a “cake” out of 99 paper cupcakes in celebration of Ida Farra’s 99 th birthday last week. Ida was had a light sealer already born in North Dakota on August 4, 1917. Her 11 siblings were on them and may not be born in either North or South Dakota. Ida and her husband Bill opened the shoe store in 1945 in Heppner. Friends and fam- ily celebrated her birthday with a special lunch and birthday cake. -Contributed photo Changes to sport physicals for county student athletes The Morrow County Health District, Columbia River Community Health Services, and Ione and Mor- row County school districts have moved from com- pleting traditional “sport physical” days to a more comprehensive schedule exam called an adolescent well care (AWC) exam. The exam will include, if necessary, an evaluation for clearance to partici- pate in sports/activities and completion of the required OSAA form. The exam will be provided through your local primary care medical clinics with no additional cost to you. Parents and athletes are strongly encouraged to schedule appointments as soon as possible. Irrigon council plans special meeting Irrigon City Council will hold a special meeting this Thursday, August 11, at 6 p.m. to revisit the water utility overage rate. The meeting will take place at Irrigon City Hall, 500 NE Main Avenue. The facility is accessi- ble for people with disabili- ties. Anyone who would stainable, so Smythe will experiment. George Koffler as chairman of the board and Joel Peterson as vice chairman. Koffler joined the Board in 1993. He retired from employment with Bank of Eastern Oregon in 2012 after a career that spanned 32 years. George and his wife Debbie live in Hermiston. Peterson joined the board in 1993. He is presi- dent of Daily Bread Farms, a family-owned farm near Ione. Joel and his wife Lea, a high school teacher, have three children. “We are excited to have George and Joel lead the board of directors for the next year. Both of these gentlemen are active and engaged board members. George continues his ser- vice on the funds manage- ment and loan committees. The increase is in response to a rate increase by the city’s garbage contractor, Sanitary Disposal, Inc. of Hermiston. Mike Jewett of Sanitary Disposal told the council they were increas- ing the fee to the city due to an increase in operating expenses for Boardman, at about 7.2 percent overall. This is the first increase in garbage rates in Board- man since 2013. The cost of a 90-gallon residential cart will go from $11 per month to $12.10 per month.
