Local churches team up for VBS next week “Growing in God’s Garden,” a vacation Bible school to celebrate God’s creation, will be held in the evenings from Sunday, Aug. 7, through Wednes- day, Aug. 10. Several local churches are teaming up to sponsor the event for all children ages four to 12. A kick-off barbeque dinner for parents and chil- dren will begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, on the lawn at Hope Lutheran Church on Alfalfa Street, below the dam in Heppner. Reg- istration can be completed during the dinner hour, 5-6 p.m. Then, from 6-8 p.m. there will be music, art, Bible lessons, science and games for the children. There is no cost to attend. A graveside service was held on Satur- day, July 30, at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. Flo was born on July 21, 1936, in McMinnville, OR, the daughter of Floyd W. and Mary Edna Gillock Hutchens. The family lived in the Burnt Woods area on the Oregon Coast. They later moved to Umatilla, where she attended school, graduating from Umatilla High School. After moving to Heppner she raised her family in Goldendale, WA, then returned to Heppner in 1985. Flo then settled in Al- bany, where she has resided for the past seven years. Del’s family was his pride and joy, and the LaRues spent much time together. It seems only ap- propriate that at the time of his death Del and Linda were on holiday with Mi- chelle and her family in Yellowstone. The community of Ione will miss seeing Del waving from his 1934 Ford coupe as he drove the town, stop- ping to chat with his many friends. The daily ritual of getting the mail often turned into a long visit with whoever he happened to meet.
