MUSTANG GOLF GOES TO STATE

Both Heppner Mustang
golf teams punched their
tickets to the OSAA State
Golf Championships at
district championships last
week. The girls’ team did
so by winning the 4A-1A
Special District 3 Cham-
pionship. The boys’ team
qualified by finishing in
second place at the 3A-1A
Special District 3 meet.
The two-day tournament
was held at the Pendleton
Country Club.
The girls’ team shot a
409 on the irst day to lead
second-place Ontario by
seven strokes. Sophie Grant
shot an 85 to inish the day
in second place overall.
Amanda Rea was in fourth
place with a round of 90.
Other scores for Heppner
on the irst day were Madi-
son Combe (107), Riane
Dompier (127) and Claire
Grieb (129).
Day two saw the Mus-
tangs stretch their lead out
and take the champion-
ship over Ontario by the
score of 815 to 840. Both
the Heppner and Ontario
teams qualified for state.
La Grande inished in third
place with an 879 and was
followed by Vale (965), En-
terprise (972), Baker (975)
and Burns (1142).
Grant shot an 89 on
day two and inished with a

total of 174. That was good
enough for her to inish as
the second-place medalist.
Rea closed with a 92 and
was the fourth-place medal-
ist with a total of 182. Both
Combe and Claire Grieb
improved their scores on
day two of the tournament.
Combe shot a 105 and in-
ished with at 212. Grieb
improved by nine shots on
day two and recorded a 120.
That gave her a total of 249
for the tournament. Caitlyn
Scrivner played on day two
for the Mustangs and ired
a 131.
Day one for the boys’
team saw Logan Grieb
come out on ire and shoot
a two-under-par 70. Other
scores for the team on day
one were Reno Ferguson
(98), Dan Bretsch (101),
Cason Mitchell (113) and
Logan Burright (118).
On day two Grieb shot
an 86 for a total of 156. He
finished in second place,
10 strokes ahead of the
third-place inisher. Bretsch
came back strong and ired
an 89 on the day for a total
of 190. Ferguson shot a
110 for a two-day total of
208 and Mitchell scored
another 113 for a total of
226. Charles Cason played
on the second day and shot
a 133 for the team.
The Mustang boys’
team inished the tourna-
ment with a total of 780.
That placed them in second
behind Vale, who won the
team title with a 756. Burns
was third with a score of
786 and Nixyaawii/Pilot
Rock finished in fourth
with a 796. All of the top
four teams qualiied for the
state championships. Other
team scores were Enterprise
(836), Grant Union (853),
Echo (864), Nyssa (867),
Wallowa (930) and Imbler
(940).
The girls’ team ad-
vanced to the OSAA 4A-1A
State Golf Championship
Tournament, which will be
played on the Ridge Course
at Eagle Crest Resort near
Redmond. The boys’ team
will travel to play in the
OSAA 3A-1A State Golf
Championship Tournament,
which will be held at the
Emerald Valley Golf Club
in Creswell. The dates for
both championships were
May 16-17.
Chess Mates awarded Rural Community
Grant

Northwest Farm Credit
Services has awarded Chess
Mates in Heppner a $500
Northwest FCS Rural Com-
munity Grant.
“When I learned that
Chess Mates was awarded
a $500 grant from North-
west Farm Credit Services,
I knew that our chess team,
volunteers and parents were
going to feel the same great
joy and appreciation that
I was feeling,” said Mary
Ann Elguézabal, ELL and
Reading Instructor at Hep-
pner Elementary School.
“We are now able to pur-
chase additional education-
al materials for our club,
which touches a variety of
students and community
members in Heppner. We
strive to have a positive
inluence on our students by
not only teaching the game
of chess but to play with
integrity and honesty. We
sincerely thank Northwest
FCS for their generosity
and support.”
She added that she and
Golden talked to the chess
players for a little bit about
the money and then over-
heard one of the students
say, “Maybe we can buy
two chessboards!”
Since the program’s in-
ception in 2007, the North-
west FCS has presented 527
rural grants totaling more
than $1,047,000.
The next rural grant

Lexington native Blake Greenup took irst place in the South-
western Oregon Community College Invitational at Bandon
Dunes May 8-9. Greenup, pictured here being presented with
the winner’s lag, plays on the SOCC women’s golf team.
She led the women with a 91 on Sunday and 77 on Monday,
helping the women’s team place fourth overall against both
two- and four-year colleges. She played again in the NWAC
Golf Championships in Walla Walla, WA May 15-16, where
she placed 10 th in the women’s division with a two-day score

Over the Tee Cup
On May 10, 18 women showed up for a day of play at
Willow Creek Country Club in Heppner. Low gross of the
ield went to Nancy Propheter, while low net of the ield
went to Judy Harris and Pat Dougherty had least putts.
For Flight A, Pat Edmundson had low gross, Karen
Thompson low net and long putt, and Corol Mitchell least
putts and long drive.
On Flight B, Lorrene Montgomery had low gross,
Shirley Martin low net, Betty Burns least putts, Judy
Harris the long drive, and Pat Dougherty the long putt.
For Flight C, Karen Haguewood had low gross and
long drive, Sue Edson low net, Alecia Putman least putts,
and Josie Kindsfather the long putt.
On Monday, May 9,
110 senior golfers played
at the par-60 Willow Creek
Country Club. The day was
beautiful and the course
was in excellent condition
for the visiting golfers. The
Willow Creek ladies served
food including breakfast
sandwiches and a lunch of
soup, bread and pie.

pass this course in order to acquire a hunting
license in the State of Oregon. Any person
wishing to hunt out of state must also hold a valid
Hunter Education Card. The course is being
taught by Jim and Darlene Marquardt.
