HES teams compete in Battle of the Books

(OBOB) is a vol-
for the first time in the
untary statewide program
for reading motivation and
comprehension sponsored
by the Oregon Associa-
tion of School Libraries in
conjunction with a Library
Services and Technology
Act grant.
The goals are to en-
courage reading for en-
joyment, broaden reading
interests, increase reading
comprehension, and pro-
mote cooperative learning.
Nineteen teams com-
peted at the regional compe-
tition in the third-through-
ifth division. HES’s third-
through-fifth-grade team
of Aden Lathrop, Jackson
Coiner, Ty Boor, Paul Lind-
say and Madison Palmer
earned the 12 th seed after
pool play and were elimi-
nated in the irst round of
bracket play.
Seventeen teams com-
peted in the sixth-through-
eighth-grade division. Hep-
pner Elementary’s team of
sixth-graders Roen Waite,
Cody Fletcher, Hannah
Finch, Jett Stewart and
Zachary Ferguison inished
with the 11 th seed after pool
play and were eliminated in
a close match in their irst
round of bracket play.
Both teams say they
learned a lot from the expe-
rience and are looking for-
ward to reading the books
for next year’s battle.

It looks like Heppner’s
34 th annual St. Patrick’s
Wee Bit o’ Ireland cel-
ebration is now part of our
history. As part of the inal
wrap-up, though, here are
inal results from a few of
the events:

It looks like the weather
held up and there was a
great turnout for the event
on Sunday, which ended
the celebration weekend.
“Unlucky Livers” Adrian,
Austin, David and Robert,
with “Viper” (Steve and
Doug) grabbing third place.
Welly Toss
Lots of people tried
their best to throw the Wel-
lington boots at the Welly
Toss this weekend; there
were 54 children through
high school and 18 adults
who participated in the in-
dividual competition. The
winners were:
Men: 1 st , Jeromy Wil-
son; 2 nd , Kevin Murray.
Women: 1 st , Caralen
Proebster; 2 nd , Jennifer Ash-
beck.
Boys nine to 16: Ty
Mustang golf opens season at Echo Invitational
The Heppner Mustang
golf teams opened up their
season at the Echo Hills
Invitational Tournament
last week.
The Mustang girls’
team inished in irst place
for the tournament by shoot-
ing a team score of 497.
Heppner was without their
top returning player from
last year, Sohie Grant, who
is dealing with an injury but
is hopeful to return by the
end of the season. Amanda
Rea stepped up and took
home the irst-place medal
on the day with a score of
98. She was followed by
Madison Combe with a 123
and Caitlyn Scrivner who
posted a 135. Claire Grieb
was next with a round of
141 and Rian Dompier shot
a 145.
On the boys’ side of
things, Daniel Bretsch led
the Mustangs with a 103.
He was followed by four
of the ive freshman golfers
who are on the team this
year. Reno Ferguson ired
a 111 on the day and Cason
Mitchell shot a 121. Ethan
Holmgren recorded a 131

places.
First place: The Extin-
guishers took it again this
year with a total throw of
296.2. Team players were
Rocky Turner, Jon Ellis,
Jeromy Wilson and Brian
Spivey. First place prize
was a sandwich or large
nacho donated by Rolling
Thunder Barbecue.
Second place: Murray’s
Team took second place,
but just barely, with 272.9;
team players were John
Murray, Kevin Murray,
Dan Wood and Sean Wood.
Second place prize was a
cheeseburger basket with
fries donated by Quality
Concessions.
Third place: Two Cou-
ples took third after a ierce
competition with Murray’s
Team, ending with a 272.5.
