Chamberlin jumped
out to a quick lead in his
match, but later got caught
in bad position and lost by
fall to Shane Lund from
Enterprise. Chamberlin
ultimately won a bronze
medal for third place and a
consolation championship.
Smith won his semii-
nal match by a pin and went
on to claim his third district
championship by a 5-0 de-
cision over sophomore Cole
Farwell from Enterprise.
Flynn, the third Mus-
tang to reach the champion-
ship semi-inals, easily won
by fall. He then won his irst
district championship with
a hard fought 5-4 decision
over senior Calvin Shaffer
from Elgin in the inals.
Two other Mustangs
earned placing medals and
team points. Freshman Leo
Waite (120 pounds) and
senior Will Lutcher (145
pounds) each inished sixth
in their weight classes.
Freshman Carson Bros-
nan also won a match and
scored team points for Hep-
pner.
Also competing for
the Mustangs were Zach
Bredfield, Charles Cason
and Jacob Wallace.
Smith and Flynn will
take two weeks to prepare
for the state competition in
Portland where all classes
1A to 6A compete side by
side on 12 mats. The tour-
nament culminates in the
state inals on ive mats in
the 12,888-seat Coliseum.
It will be Smith’s third
state tournament, while Fly-
nn will be competing for the
irst time. Smith already has
two state championships
from his previous two trips
to the state tournament.
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team in-
ished up its Blue Moun-
tain Conference season by
defeating the Pilot Rock
Rockets by a score of 70-
43. With the win, the Mus-
tangs end BMC play with a
record of 8-2 and are 18-3
overall on the season. They
are currently ranked fourth
in the OSAA 2A State Bas-
ketball rankings.
On senior night, a lit-
tle extra emotion filled
the gymnasium. Every-
one knew it could be the
last time that this special
group of senior boys would
be playing on their home
court. Heppner started the
game out slowly and only
led 15-13 at the end of the
first quarter. They then
started to heat up on the
offensive end of the loor
and scored 18 points in the
second quarter and held
Pilot Rock to only 12. At
halftime the Mustangs led
the game 33-25.
Another fast-paced
third quarter saw Heppner
continue to pull away and
take a commanding 52-35
lead. In the fourth quarter

Heppner JV ends
season with a win
The Heppner Mus-
tang boys’ junior varsity
team inished its season by
defeating the Pilot Rock
Rockets by a score of 50-
38. The JV Mustangs ended
the season with an 8-9 re-
cord.
Heppner jumped out
quickly against the Rockets
and led 19-5 at the end of
the irst. The second quarter
was a little bit closer but
the Mustangs still led 28-
17 at halftime. Pilot Rock
outscored the Mustangs 15-
10 in the third quarter, but
Heppner still led the game
38-32. A strong defensive
effort by the Mustangs held
the Rockets to only six
points in the inal quarter.
Heppner was able to put
12 points on the board and
got the win by a inal score
of 50-38.

Queen tryouts March
26 for Spray Rodeo
Queen tryouts for the May 28-29 Spray Rodeo will
be held Saturday, March 26, at noon at the Spray Rodeo
Grounds. Contestants do not have to be local or Wheeler
County residents but they must be at least 15 years old
and must never have been married or had children.

Willow Creek Park District will have a regular
board meeting at 5:15 p.m. next Tuesday, Feb. 23, at
Heppner City Hall.

sounded, the Mustangs got
the victory by a score of
70-43.
Patrick Collins and Lo-
gan Grieb led the Mustangs
in scoring with 15 points
each. Collins also had 11
rebounds, 2 assists and 1
blocked shot. To go along
with his scoring, Grieb also
contributed 3 rebounds, 4
assists and a blocked shot.
Weston Putman hit four
three-pointers on his way to
13 points on the night. He
also had 8 rebounds and 2
steals. CJ Kindle and Caden
Hedman scored 8 points
each in the game. Kindle
also dished out 5 assists and
had 3 rebounds. Hedman
also contributed a rebound
and a steal. Kevin Murray
had 4 points, 5 rebounds
and an assist while Kolby
Currin also scored 4 points
and had a rebound for the
Mustangs. Kaden Clark
scored 2 points and had 2
rebounds and Jake Lindsay
had 1 point and 1 rebound.
The Mustangs, who
are the number-one seeded
team in the district, will
now begin post-season play
at the BMC District Tourna-
ment. They will play the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
Scots at 1 p.m. this Friday at
the Pendleton Convention
Center.

HHS girls inish season Freshman basketball
ends successful season
The Heppner Mustang
Freshman Boys’ basketball
team recently finished a
successful season with a
7-4 record. There was a
total of 11 boys on the team
and they played several
other 2A freshman teams,
and even went up against a
couple of JV teams.
Leading the way in
scoring for the season was
Trent Smith, who had 82

Howard finished with 65
points. Hunter Nichols tal-
lied 56 points this season
and Reno Ferguson hit for
49. Gibson McCurry was
next with 47 points and Ca-
son Mitchell recorded 28.
Keegan Gibbs chipped in
20 points for the team. With
four points each were Mads
Meltofte and Elijah Fetter.
Zavier Glover rounded out
the scoring with two points
in the season.
This group did a good
job in making the tough
transition from junior high
school basketball to the
high school level. The fu-
ture of Mustang basketball
certainly looks bright with
this group of players.
