The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team split
its games last weekend in
Columbia Basin Confer-
ence play. They lost at home
to the ifth-ranked Irrigon
Knights by a score of 49-42.
They then rebounded with a
win on the road by defeat-
ing the 12 th ranked Stanield
Tigers 44-43. The Mustangs
(16-2, 6-1) are in irst place
in the CBC standings and
currently the number-two
team in the OSAA 2A state
basketball rankings.
Against the Knights,
Heppner came out a little
slow and Irrigon forced the
tempo of play. The score af-
ter the irst quarter saw the
Knights leading 16-11. A lid
seemed to be on the basket
in the second quarter for
the Mustangs as they could
only score seven points.
Irrigon doubled them up as
they scored 14 points and
led 30-18 at halftime.
Heppner came out in
the second half and out-
scored the Knights in both
quarters, 11-9 in the third
and 13-10 in the fourth.
This allowed the Mustangs
to pull within three points
with just under one min-
ute left in the game. Hep-
pner was forced to foul
the Knights and they made
several free-throws at the
end of the game to preserve
the victory 49-42.
CJ Kindle led the Mus-
tangs with 17 points, 8
rebounds, 2 assists and
2 steals. Patrick Collins
followed with 14 points,
9 rebounds, 1 steal and a
blocked shot. Logan Grieb
scored 5 points, had 5 re-
bounds, 1 assist, 1 steal
and a blocked shot. Ca-
MILES &
den Hedman chipped in
4 points and an assist on
the night. Weston Putman
had 2 points, 4 rebounds
and 2 steals for the team.
Kaden Clark contributed 2
rebounds and Kevin Mur-
ray had 4.
In the game at Stan-
ield, the Mustangs came
out of the locker room and
took control of the game
early. They led 13-8 at the
end of the irst quarter and
28-21 at halftime. Both
teams scored nine points
in the third quarter and the
Mustangs still led the game
by a score of 37-30. The
teams traded runs in the
hard-fought fourth quarter,
but the Tigers got the best
of the Mustangs by a score
of 13-7. Heppner led the
game by one point as Stan-
ield ended up with the ball
under their own basket with
only one second left on the
clock. They inbounded the
ball and put up a shot at the
buzzer but it bounced off of
the rim. The Mustangs were
able to hold on and get the
win 44-43.
Leading the way in
scoring for Heppner was
Putman with 17. He also
grabbed 5 rebounds, had
an assist and 2 steals. Grieb
followed with 10 points, 3
rebounds, 2 assists and a
blocked shot. Collins was
next with 7 points, 14 re-
bounds and 2 blocked shots.
Kindle scored 6 points, had
7 rebounds and 2 assists in
the game. Hedman scored 2
points and had 3 rebounds
and 2 assists for the Mus-
tangs. Clark also scored 2
points and had a rebound
and a steal. Lindsay had a
rebound in the game.
The Mustangs continue
CBC play this weekend as
they travel to Athena to take
on the Weston-McEwen
TigerScots on Friday night.
The will then host the Cul-
ver Bulldogs on Saturday.
