The Heppner Mustangs
wrestling team was in John
Day on Friday for an 11-
team tournament at Grant
Union. It was a round-robin
tournament where wrestlers
were divided into pools by
size and experience and
wrestled all of the oppo-
nents in their pool.
Three Mustangs went
undefeated on the day. Leo
Waite, competing in the
106-113 pound bracket,
had the most matches and
the most wins for the day.
Waite inished the day with
ive wins and no losses. His
irst four wins were by pin
and the inal was a battle to
the end with Waite ending
on top of an 11-8 decision.
Tim Jaca, a junior in
his second year of wres-
tling, pinned all four of his
challengers to complete a
perfect 4-0 record for the
tournament.
Cord Flynn was the
third Heppner wrestler to
go undefeated. He pinned
all three of his opponents,
including second-ranked
Taylor Tandy from Imbler,
with whom Flynn had pre-
viously traded close deci-
sions in two prior matches
this season.
Will Lutcher picked
up a couple of wins by pin
in his 152-pound varsity
bracket on his way to a 2-2
record.
Also competing for
the Mustangs were Trevor
Chamberlin, Carson Bros-
nan and Charles Cason.
The Mustangs will next
be in action at home on Jan.
30 at the Bank of Eastern
Oregon Invitational, where
12-14 teams are expected
to compete in a full day
of wrestling culminating
with championship matches
wrestled center stage under
a spotlight.

The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team con-
tinued their winning ways
with a 57-41 victory over
the Pilot Rock Rockets.
With the win, Heppner in-
ishes the irst half of CBC
play undefeated with a 5-0
record. The team is 15-1
overall for the season and
is currently the number-two
team in the OSAA 2A state
basketball rankings.
The Mustangs started
the game out fast and led
after the irst quarter by a
score of 14-5. They kept
up the defensive pressure in
the second quarter and held
the Rockets to six points
while Heppner scored an-
other 14. The Mustangs led
at halftime by the score of
28-11.
In the second half of
the game, Heppner worked
on many different player
combinations and defensive
schemes. They were think-
ing of teams they would
have to play later on in the
season and wanted to try
out some new moves. The
moves must have worked,
because Heppner outscored
the Rockets 17-15 in the
third quarter to lead 45-26.
The Mustangs substituted
freely in the fourth quarter
and were outscored 15-12.
That made the inal score of
the game 57-41 in favor of
the Mustangs.
Heppner shot 43 per-
cent overall from the ield
and held the Rockets to only
36 percent shooting. The
Mustangs outrebounded the
Rockets 32-18 in the game.
A balanced scoring at-
tack was led by CJ Kindle
and Weston Putman, who
had 16 points each. They
both also had 4 rebounds
on the night. Kindle was
also credited with 2 assists
and 1 steal for the team.
Patrick Collins was next
with 10 points, 8 rebounds,
2 blocked shots, 1 assist
and 1 steal. Logan Grieb
chipped in 9 points, had
7 rebounds, 4 assists and
2 steals for the Mustangs.
Caden Hedman scored 6
points and had a rebound,
while Kaden Clark contrib-
uted 5 rebounds and Kevin
Murray had 2. Kolby Cur-
rin had a rebound and Jake
Lindsay a steal in the game.
The Mustangs host the
Irrigon Knights on Friday
night and then travel to

on Saturday.

Heppner JV boys shoot down Rockets
The Heppner Mustang
JV boys’ basketball team
won their game against the
Pilot Rock Rockets by a
score of 38-28.
A slow-paced irst quar-
ter saw the Rockets lead
9-6. The second quarter was
just as close as Pilot Rock
led the game at halftime by
a score of 18-15.
Heppner took over the
game in the third quarter
and outscored the Rockets
10-1. That made the score
25-19 as the fourth quarter
started. Heppner scored 13
points in the final period
and held Pilot Rock to 9.
That made the inal score
of the game 38-28 in favor
of the Mustangs.
Derek Howard led the
team in scoring with 9.
Wyatt Steagall and Kevin
Smith both scored 8 points
for the team. Jake Lindsay
and Hunter Nichols each
scored 3 points in the game.

Kolby Currin, Beau Wolters
and Dakota Howard. Coby
Dougherty made a free
