feated with a record of 5-0. Condon 24-6 and Dufur
24-20. The Cardinals had
a very young team this year.
On paper, this should have
been a “rebuilding” year
for Ione. They started the
season with seven out of 14
players being sixth graders,
and ending with six out of
eleven.
In response to the team
make-up, Coach Dale Hol-
land changed the way he
taught during practice and
the way he coached during
the games to accommodate
for the lack of experience
and size. During the first
few games of the season,
the younger players had
the opportunity to log a lot
of playing time, gaining
invaluable experience.
“By the time they trav-
eled to Dufur—a team they
hadn’t beaten in several
years—for the last game
of the season, the players
did not think of themselves
as underdogs anymore,”
said Coach Jim Raible.
“When they took to field,
they were confident and
prepared, and while it was
a close game throughout,
Ione never trailed.”
