Available Now Call David Sykes at Heppner Gazette. 541-676-9228 Deadline for news and advertising: Monday at 5 p.m. -SEVEN A View from the Hill By Doris Brosnan With the calendar’s beginning of the Fall sea- son has arrived the official beginnings of popular deer and elk hunting seasons, and the Willow Creek Ter- race residents who partici- pate in morning discussions have had plenty to say about “hunting.” Stories of earlier times invariably include more references to “sustenance” than to “sport,” for the success of hunting efforts was important to having food on the table. Residents have also remembered the evolution of hunting during their hunting days: the need for licenses, the increasing rules and regulations, the seemingly fewer places open to public hunting, and the increasing costs. Sports are just one ben- eficiary of funds from the Heppner Schools’ Booster Club, which held its an- nual fundraising dinner and auction last Saturday evening. For the auction, the Terrace Staff donated many items for a “Reading Basket.” Among the many enjoyable reading-related items in the huge basket were autographed copies of local author Scott McE- wen’s two books, donated by McEwen. Since last week was designated “Fire Preven- tion Week,” conversations this week have included reactions to the evacua- tion exercise always held at this time of year. Staff and residents must all par- ticipate in the fire drill, and not everyone appreciates the inconvenience until more thought is given to its importance. This is espe- cially timely this year, as a discussion has also focused on the proposed new fire hall for Heppner. One of the Terrace’s employees is also a volunteer firefighter, so thanks is extended to Ka- tilyn Jordan for her service. This week is also time for another important dis- comfort, flu shots. Both staff and residents will endure the moments of unease for the months of protection. And speaking of “protection,” Tuesday, Oct. 13, marked the origin of the U.S. Navy in 1775, and with it came recognition of the community’s two Navy veterans, Kenneth Peck and Marj Burgess. Since Thursday is “Na- tional Cake Decorating Day,” the residents on the Hill will have an opportu- nity to exercise their skills in decorating individual cakes. Getting the creative juices flowing should be fun, and later eating the results should be a fitting reward. “National Color Day” is on the 22 nd . The resi- dents and staff will have an opportunity that day to take a test that answers the question, “What color is my personality?” And this for- fun answer will include an explanation of what one’s color reflects. Heppner preschoolers in the guise of ghosts, gob- lins and other creepy crea- tures will haunt the Willow Creek Terrace on the 27 th , coming to party with the residents. The young people always seem to enjoy this annual Halloween party at the Terrace, and some will undoubtedly return on Halloween for more treats, when the “Pumpkin Patch” – residents wearing their pumpkin t-shirts – will welcome trick-or-treaters until 8 p.m. Two familiar faces will be missing from the “Pump- kin Patch” this year, and both are missed by the community. Health issues resulted in Lil Boyce’s and Billie Lacey’s having to move. Billie has since passed away. Fay Pierce returned to Heppner and moved into an apartment at the Terrace on Sep. 21. She is a wel- come addition to life on the Hill. Two other additions welcomed to the Terrace are staff members Saman- tha Lemmon and Douglas Struthers, who joined the community in August. The welcome mat is out for new residents, also, for three apartments are available at the Terrace, which can be viewed as an opportunity to meet new people and forge new friendships.
