Mustangs maintain perfect record with
win over Bulldogs
The Heppner Mustang
football team continued its
winning ways with a 56-0
victory over the Culver
Bulldogs on Friday night.
With the win, the Mustangs’
record improves to 2-0 in
Columbia Basin Confer-
ence play and 6-0 overall.
The Mustangs scored
touchdowns on eight of
their 10 possessions. Their
first came with only a little
over a minute gone in the
game. The Heppner defense
forced a Culver fumble
that Wyatt Steagall recov-
ered at the 39-yard line.
On the very next play, CJ
Kindle caught a pass from
Kaden Clark and sprinted
down the right sideline for
a touchdown. That gave the
Mustangs a 6-0 lead.
The powerful Heppner
defense forced the Bull-
dogs to punt on their next
possession. Patrick Collins
forced the punter to fumble
and Steagall fell on the ball
at the 12-yard line. Once
again, on the very next play,
Kindle scored a touchdown
on a run to the right corner
of the end zone. Logan
Grieb kicked the point-
after-touchdown and that
made the score 13-0.
A three-and-out on the
next Culver possession led
to the Mustangs getting the
ball at their own 34-yard
line. After a 13-yard run by
Tommy Bredfield and a 14-
yard pass catch by Weston
Putman, Clark ran the ball
in for a touchdown from 34
yards out. The Grieb PAT
kick was good and the score
was now 20-0.
Culver fumbled again
and Kolby Currin recovered
the ball at the Bulldog 23-
yard line. Clark then found
Grieb open in the end zone
and hit him with a touch-
down pass. The Grieb PAT
kick was good and Heppner
led 27-0 as the first quarter
ended.
As the second quarter
began, Heppner forced an-
other Bulldog punt. A six-
play, 80-yard drive that fea-
tured a 17-yard Clark run,
a 37-yard pass completion
from Clark to Kindle and an
18-yard run by Bredfield,
ended with a score when

Clark ran the ball in from
four yards out. The PAT
kick by Grieb was good and
the lead grew to 34-0.
The teams then traded
possessions. A Culver punt
pinned the Mustangs deep
in their own territory at the
six-yard line. Bredfield then
ran the ball for 14 yards to
the 20-yard line. On the
next play, Grieb took the
handoff and sprinted around
the left end of the Mustang
line for an 80-yard touch-
down run. His PAT kick was
good and the score was 41-0
at halftime.
Heppner got the ball
to start the second half. A
seven-play drive that cov-
ered 57 yards ended with
another touchdown when
Bredfield ran it in from 21
yards out. The Grieb PAT
kick was good and the score
was 48-0 just three minutes
into the half. The rest of the
game would be played with
a running clock because the
Mustangs were ahead by
over 45 points.
The Mustang coach-
ing staff substituted freely
at that point in the game
and everyone got to play
quality minutes. Heppner
went on a 12-play drive that
ended when Coby Dough-
erty scored a touchdown
from one yard out. Kevin
Smith then packed the ball
in to score the two-point
conversion. That made the
score 56-0. The Heppner
defense held the Bulldogs
out of the end zone for the
rest of the game to preserve
the shutout.
Heppner completely
dominated the game in
every way. The Mustangs
had 23 first downs to six
for Culver. Heppner ran
for 354 yards and Culver
ended with –47 yards rush-
ing. The Mustangs had 161
yards passing and Culver
26. Total yards for the game
were Heppner 515 and Cul-
ver –21.
The swarming Heppner
defense was led by Col-
lins with 11 tackles. Kevin
Murray followed with 10
tackles for the Mustangs.
Putman and Bredfield fin-
ished with nine tackles each
in the game. Saul Erickson
had five tackles and Currin,
Steagall and Tim Jaca all
recorded four each. Players
who had two tackles in the
game were Kindle, Clark,
Grieb, Tristan Moses, Beau
Wolters and Zach Bredfield.
Recording one tackle each

This week the Hep-
pner Mustang Junior Var-
sity football team lost a
close contest to the Irrigon
Knights by a score of 27-20.
Irrigon scored on their
first possession with a long
pass play. They made the
PAT and led the game 7-0.
Heppner then came back to
score on their first drive of
the game. After an 18-yard
run by Kaden Corbin, quar-
terback Kevin Smith found
Beau Wolters open. He hit
him with a pass and Wolters
rumbled down the sideline
to score a touchdown. That
brought the Mustangs to
within one point at 7-6.
The Knights scored a
touchdown the next time
they got the ball. On the
point-after attempt, Wolt-
ers busted through the line
and blocked the kick. That
made the score 13-6 in
favor of the Knights. Once
again, Heppner scored the
next time they got the ball.
Coby Dougherty outran
the defense and scored on
a 63-yard sprint down the
sideline. Smith completed a
pass to Hunter Nichols for
the two-point conversion to
give the Mustangs the lead
14-13.
The lead was short-
lived as Irrigon scored on
their next possession. The
PAT kick was good and the
Knights led again 20-14. A
Smith pass was intercepted
the next time Heppner had
the ball. The Mustang de-
fense stopped the Knights
and they turned it over on
downs. Heppner could not
capitalize on the opportu-
nity and gave the ball back
to Irrigon. The Knights
scored on this possession
with another long pass play.
The extra point was good
and Irrigon led 27-14.
After not being able
to mount a drive, Heppner
gave the ball back to Irrigon
on downs. On their first
play from scrimmage, the
Mustangs forced a fumble
that they recovered. Hep-
pner then put together an
eight-play drive to score
again. This time Corbin ran
the ball in from 15 yards
out for the touchdown. The
extra point play failed and
Irrigon got the win by a
score of 27-20.
Dougherty led the team
in rushing with 15 carries
for 88 yards and a touch-
down. Corbin packed the
ball 11 times and gained
77 yards and also had one
touchdown.
Smith was 3-9 passing
the ball for 74 yards and
a touchdown. He also had
one pass intercepted in the
game. Wolters caught one
pass for 44 yards and a
touchdown. Corbin also had
one catch for 19 yards and
Peyton Lehman had one
catch for 11 yards. Caden
Hedman had one catch for
a four-yard gain.
Wolters led the Mus-
tangs in tackles with 15.
Lane Wilhelm was next
with 10 and Tristan Moses
had eight tackles. Ethan
Akers had seven tackles and
Corbin finished with six.
Hedman and Dakota How-
ard both had four tackles
in the game. Having three
tackles each in the contest
were Smith, Dougherty,
Jake Lindsay, Derek How-
ard and Zach Bredfield.
Jacob Wallace finished with
two tackles and Mels Melt-
ofte had one.
