assigned to Army supply;
he “handed out the bullets,”
as he used to like to say. He
served in Korea from 1950
to 1952, after which he re-
turned to Arlington.
On Friday, May 13,
1955 he married Priscilla
Darlene White. The couple
had four children in five
years. Allan supported his
family by working for area
farmers. He remembered
sewing bags of wheat shut
and loading bags of wheat
as a young man, and doing
construction work. He tried
his hand at farming for a
time on his father-in-law,
Dick Logan’s, property.
Eventually, he settled on
masonry as his primary
source of income, and much
of the sidewalks, block and
brick work around town
are his. He was a masonry
craftsman who took pride in
his work and did business
on a handshake. He built
his own house of brick in
1976, doing almost all of
the work himself. For many
years Allan took time off
his own work to help Gene
Mulkey with harvest. When
Gene retired from harvest,
Allan also retired. Allan

Alvin ‘Al’ James Vinson—Alvin ‘Al’ James Vinson,
65, of El Centro, CA, formerly of Heppner, passed away
at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, WA on June 26, 2015 after
a brief illness. Al was born to Delbert Ted and Suzanne

knee and shoulder, leaving
his sons, Scott and Gary, to
carry on the family tradition
of craftsmanship, though all
of his children inherited his
work ethic.
Allan was diagnosed
with kidney disease at the
age of 83. At that time he
gave up cutting his own
wood. He relied on his
daughter Sheila for much
of his care for the next
three years. His health held
steady until December of
2014; he then bounced back
for the first five months of
this year, but his health be-
gan to decline slowly over
the summer and then rapid-
ly this past month. The past
year he has relied on his
daughter-in-law Claudia to
advocate for him, keep his
meds straight and get him
to appointments. Whenever
his nurse practitioner, Jon
Soffer, would ask him if
he had any pain, he would
grin and say “Just her!” In
the last few weeks of his
life, his primary caregiver
was his grandson, Daniel,
whose kindness and pa-
tience were amazing and
much appreciated by Allan
and the whole family. Al-
lan could not have stayed
at home without Daniel’s
help.
Allan is survived by his
family, Darlene Smythe,
Sheila and John Garrett,
Gary Smythe, and Daniel
Smythe and his daughter
Maci Smythe, all of Ar-
lington; Scott, Claudia and
Aaron Smythe of Hardman;
Lori Smythe Yates, and
Jessica and Finn Dale, all
of Salem; and Colin Yates
of Hawaii.
