The church welcomed Pastor Willis “Tripp” Finch and his family with a potluck this past weekend; Finch’s first official Sunday as pas- tor will be this Sunday, Aug. 9. Finch, 35, has brought his family a long way from home to take the pastoral position at Willow Creek Baptist. A North Carolina native, he was born and raised in Rocky Mount, NC, about an hour east of Raleigh. He graduated from high school in Bailey, NC before going on to attend Barton College in Wilson, NC. It was there that he met his wife, Julia, who was born in Florida but had lived in Maryland from the age of 10. They married and now have three children, Hannah, 11, Jacob, 10, and Lizzie, 7. Julia graduated from Barton with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design, but Finch transferred to North Carolina State Uni- versity in Raleigh, graduat- ing from there with a degree in political science. After NC State, Finch went on to Southeastern Baptist Theological Semi- nary in Wake Forest, NC, where he obtained a Master of Divinity in Christian ministry. He then spent the next four and a half years serving as a pastor in Spring Hope, NC. With all that history in North Carolina, it seems like a big jump to move a family nearly 3,000 miles away. However, Finch said Heppner seemed like the perfect fit. “I saw the pastoral job listing on the internet and I’d always wanted to go to the West Coast—though I never really thought I’d make it out here—but Wil- low Creek was just a really good fit for where I was at pastorally,” he said. “When we started talking to some people from the church, we just really clicked.” “I’m from a small town, so we were looking for something in a small town,” he added. “After we visited, we were sold on it. We were blown away by how tight-knit the commu- nity was, and we wanted to be a part of it. We thought it would be a great place to not only minster but also to raise our children.” While North Carolina and Oregon may be thou- sands of miles apart on the map, Finch said it hasn’t been that difficult an adjust- ment so far. “We’re kind of used to some of the aspects of a small town. The crops are different, of course, but it’s still an agriculturally-based com- munity.” Finch says he and his family are eager to become part of life in Heppner, both in their church and in the community at large. “We are just over- whelmed with the friend- liness of the people here. We’re really looking for- ward to ministering to the people and becoming part of the community,” he said. “It’s refreshing to drive down the street and have people wave at you. It’s just been tremendous. “It’s not only blessed us but we also hope to bless the community.” Willow Creek Baptist Church is located at 560 Minor St, Heppner.
