Dear editor,
It has been a year since I began to volunteer at the
Neighborhood Center, and I have found it to be a very
rewarding experience, seeing the blessing it is to many.
The center is not just gently-used clothing, house-
wares, books, toys, shoes and a food pantry. It is family
and friends caring and supplying the needs of others, done
through the donations of food, clothing and miscellaneous
items. These are in return sold in the store at affordable
prices to purchase food for the pantry, which supplies food
boxes for those in need. Each process requires volunteers
who have the desire to serve others by donating their time
and energy to receive, sort, clean or launder donations,
made presentable and ready for the store.
I’m writing this to let the community know the center
can always use more volunteers and to see if anyone is
interested in investing their time in the lives of others
while being blessed themselves. If so, please call or come
in and speak to Lisa. The phone number is 541-676-5024.
Thank you one and all,
Florence Nolan, Heppner

From the verdant Umatilla forest
The hillsides part
To let it wind its willful way
Through fields of wheat,
Past farms and towns and ranches
And pastures of grazing cattle
To feed the river Columbia.

Dammed at Heppner,
(Where it flooded lethally in nineteen aught three)
Flowing past Lexington, Ione, Cecil and McNabb.

Near the cemetery northeast
Where family graves adorn the Ione hillside
I spent boyhood summers, riding with my cousin,
Playing with my brothers at grandmother’s house.

They now are gone, with memories yet strong,
While waters of Willow Creek keep flowing along.

Editor’s note: Mr. Fletcher’s grandmother was a
lifelong resident of Ione. He wrote this poem last month
to honor her date of birth and thought others in Morrow
County might like it, as well.
