Ione had a great week-
end of track and field. Fri-
day 13 team members went
to Boardman for the Riv-
erside JV Invite and came
away with seven personal
records (PRs), one season
best (SB) and sibenchmarks
set. As a team, the women
earned 64 points and the
men earned 6. Because the
meet was a JV meet, it was
not placed; however, it was
scored.
Setting PRS in Board-
man were: David Smidma-
jer, 100M, 13.29a; Rachel
Holland, 100M, 14.13a,
shot put, 25’5.5”, and dis-
cus, 62’3”; Karsen Dumler,
discus-79’10”; Chris Pryor,
javelin, 48’1”; and Maggie
Flynn, shot put, 25’.
Setting an SB mark was
Jorge Aguilar in the 200M
with 29.22a.
The team had oppor-
tunities to try new events
at this meet and sort out
what they might do at the
upcoming district champi-
onship. Benchmarks were:
200M—Jessie Flynn, jav-
elin—Jorge Aguilar, Sonia
Medina and Frances Knop,
discus—Maggie Flynn, TJ
Patton and Rachel Holland.
On Saturday, seven
members traveled to the
qualifiers meet in Portland
(1A Track Classic). Those
seven athletes participated
in 18 different events and
exceeded expectations by
placing in all events they
participated in, except for
two.
Jessie Flynn had a
“clean sweep” in all her
events; by earning first in all
of them, she earned 40 team
points. Jessie also ran a
season best 300M Hurdles,
finally breaking under 50
seconds (49.38a).
Rachel Holland earned
14 team points in three
events—javelin, 200M and
400M.
Kaitlin Garrett com-
peted well, staying in close
range of her season best
marks in the discus and
shot put.
Jorge Aguilar had two
PRs in both his events.
He took first in shot put
with 40’4.75” and fourth
in discus, 113’3”, earning
15 team points.
TJ Patton placed sixth
in the 800M and seventh in
the 1500M, earning 5 team
points. He ran against some
very fast competition.
David Smidmajer got
a PR in javelin at 107’10”
while placing sixth. He also
ran very well in the 100M
and 200M, placing eighth
in both and earning 5 team
points.
Hector Aguilar round-
ed out the competitors,
placing sixth in long jump
and eighth in the 400M
while running a season best
1:06.48a. He earned four
team points.
The women placed fifth
with 54 points and the men
placed ninth with 29 points.
Of the 15 schools partici-
pating, eight were from our
District 3 league.
“Overall, we were ex-
tremely proud of all their
performances,” said Coach
Paula Emmel. “Bringing
home six medals and 10
ribbons for seven athletes
is worth the trip!”
The team has a Thurs-
day meet in Umatilla and
one last regular-season
meet in Arlington on Sat-
urday. These are the last
competitions before district
championships on the 16 th .

Morrow County 4-H youth teach their peers
from around Eastern Oregon
The weekend of April
10-12, a group of eight
teens from Morrow County
made the trip to Eastern
Oregon University in La
Grande for the 2015 4-H
Eastern Oregon Leadership
Retreat (EOLR): “Leader-
ship Never Grows Old!”
Before the retreat be-
gan, the group stopped at
the Maridell Center in La
Grande for some roller skat-
ing, mini golf and laser tag.
During this weekend
retreat, youth participated
in various leadership classes
taught by their peers on the
Governing Board (teams
compiled of two teens from
each hosting county), took
part in community service
projects around the uni-
versity campus, listened
to guest speakers, went to
a dance and game night,
and enjoyed staying on the
beautiful EOU Campus for
a brief view of what college
life is like.
Morrow County 4-H
youth serving on the Gov-
erning Board for the first
time in recent years were
Emily Taylor of Ione and
Kane Sweeney of Heppner.
Together with teammate
Josh White from Uma-
tilla County, they taught
a valuable class on event
planning; they wanted to
teach something that oth-
ers could take home and
put into practice whether it

Morrow County youth for
attending and also of Emily
and Kane for stepping into
this new leadership role to
teach their peers—they did
an excellent job and made a
positive impact in the lives
of others this weekend,”

Sew Fantastic 4-H
Club News
The Sew Fantastic 4-H
Club has been busy with
spring sewing projects.
At their April meeting,
members continued to work
on sewing hooded sweat-
shirts. This project has
involved learning a variety
of new skills, including:
sewing on a contrasting
kangaroo pocket, making a
hood with a lining, creating
an applique design for the
front or back, and working
with knit ribbing for the
cuffs and waistband.
First-year members
had the option of sewing
pajamas or sweatpants in-
stead, and some members
are going to do both proj-
ects. After finishing up their
sweatshirts and/or pants,
they will start to work on
other projects for the county
fair.
The meeting concluded
with refreshments, which
were served by Aubriana
Rodriguez.
Sew Fantastic will have
its next meeting on May
31 at the Ione Community
Church.
