PENDLETON UNDERGROUND
AWANA holds awards night,
right there in the moment.
Pendleton’s Underground Comes to Life tour treat visitors
to lively scenes like this bar fight during the two-hour tour.

-Continued from PAGE ONE drunk in a bar to playing a
in it and they gave me
a role hanging out and be-
ing a drunk guy in a bar,”
Sykes recalls. “Then the
sheepherder couldn’t make
it one year. He has some
lines. They asked if I could
do it, they gave me a script,
and I ran away with it.”
That was about five
years ago. Sykes says he
has played the sheepherder
ever since, first in the non-
speaking role of the drunk
sheepherder in the Sham-
erock Room and then in
his speaking role as the
same sheepherder seeking a
bath in Hop Sing’s Chinese
Laundry.
“I go from playing a
drunk in a Chinese bath,”
Sykes says with a laugh.
Sykes says the best part
is how involved the tourists
become in the productions.
With visitors from as far
away as Holland and Ger-
many, he says it’s amazing
how quickly people forget
that they are watching a
group of actors.
“You really lose your-
self for a second; they get
caught up in the moment.
We make it so realistic…
everyone’s dressed out to
the T, the bar piano is play-
ing, the can-can girls are
dancing, and it seems so
real. They get this look on
their face and they’re just
You’ll have an old lady
want to grab you and take
you out for a dance,” he
says. “They’re just having
a ball.”
Though the tour, which
runs for one day, involves
acting out the scenes 20
times for hundreds of visi-
tors, Sykes says he never
gets nervous or bored.
“It’s more excited than
nervous. We get to impro-
vise but we have our basic
story that we tell,” he says.
“I look forward to it every
year. You get to be someone
you’re not. You get to hang
out with a bunch of friends
and have a really good
time.”
The once-a-year event
has run since the late 1990s
and features more than 75
live actors playing the parts
of card players, dancers,
musicians, Chinese work-
ers, merchants, and even
local madam Stella and
her working girls as they
would have appeared 100
years ago.
Tickets for the May
16 event are limited and
reservations are required;
cost is $50 per person. The
live production is for adults
only. Call 541-276-0730 for
more information.
BEO reports first quarter earnings
Heppner—BEO Ban-
corp and its subsidiary,
Bank of Eastern Oregon,
announced first quarter
2015 consolidated net in-
come of $470,000 or $0.39
per share, compared to
$560,000 or $0.51 per share
for first quarter 2014. Total
assets were $339.8 million,
up 11.3 percent year over
year. Net loans of $273.6
million were up 15.8 per-
cent from the same period
in 2014, while deposits
were at $302.1 million up
11.3 percent year over year.
“The double digit
growth in deposit, loans
and total assets came as a
result of the Bank Reale
acquisition which closed on
February 28, 2015. Profit-
ability for the quarter was
impacted by non-recurring
expenses associated with
the acquisition,” said Presi-
dent and CEO Jeff Bailey.
Chief Financial Officer
Mark Lemmon said, “Net
interest income after pro-
vision for loan losses is up
2.4 percent from last year.
Return on Average Assets
is 0.56 percent compared to
0.74 percent last year; with
Return on Average Equity
at 7.24 percent versus 9.65
percent in 2014.”
Lemmon went on to
say, “Even though returns
for the quarter were im-
pacted by acquisition costs
as well as the seasonality
of the loan portfolio, steady
profits over the past year
have added to shareholders’
equity, which is up 15.04
percent from last year.”
“As an agricultural
based bank, we often see
seasonal swings in our
loan portfolio. These were
evident over the past few
months, but we are now
seeing our typical increase
in lending as spring arrives.
Overall our ag portfolio
has performed quite well,
but we realize that ag is a
cyclical type of business,”
concluded Bailey.
