Chris Sykes of Pendle-
ton and Robin Adams from
Vancouver, WA teamed up
to win the Western BCA
Eight Ball Championships
Open Mixed Scotch Dou-
bles in Lincoln City, OR
recently.
The pair, who met the
morning they were to play
together, beat out 140 other
teams for the champion-
ship spot. Sykes, the son
of David and April Sykes
of Heppner, said he and
Adams gelled immediately.
“She is an awesome
player, firing balls in left
and right, and a fun partner
to play with. We came back
from the loser’s side of the
bracket. We played really
well and had a little luck on
our side, too,” said Sykes.
“When the last ball
went in, Robin looked at
me and said, ‘I think we just
won.’ We sat there for a sec-
ond not realizing what just
happened, then we jumped
up and gave each other a
high-five and a hug.”

ODFW invites
families for a day of
fishing
SALEM, Ore.—The
Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife (ODFW) in-
vites Oregon families to
come fishing at a free fam-
ily fishing event locally this
June.
The event is one of 33
free Family Fishing events
scheduled throughout the
state this spring and sum-
mer.
The local event will
be held June 6 at Cutsforth
Pond. Youth fishing will
take place from 8:30-11
a.m. with family fishing
beginning at noon.
Children under the age
of 14 can fish for free, while
kids 14 to 17 and adults
will need an Oregon fishing
license in order to fish.
The events are de-
signed to show families
how easy and fun fishing
can be, said Shahab Far-
zanegan, ODFW angler ed-
ucation coordinator. ODFW
provides loaner rods and
reels, tackle, instruction
and freshly stocked fish—
everything a family needs
for a successful fishing trip.
“These events are fan-
tastic and I enjoy taking
my kids and their friends
and teaching them different
techniques,” said one recent
participant. “The best part
about it is that the kids catch
fish and want to go again.”

yellow flowers in the spring
and is used as ground cover.
In some areas of eastern
Oregon, it is considered a
noxious weed.
The plant is slightly
toxic, and the sap can be
very irritating, producing
blisters on the skin. When
working around the plant,
protective clothing should
be worn. Locations inside
the City of Heppner are
expanding, and many are
landscaped areas. Locations
outside the city are becom-
ing more prevalent, and
without control, can drasti-
cally reduce grazing land.

ty Weed Advisory Board

research plants before pur-
chasing and adding them to
