Season ends for fillies at
district tournament
The season ended for
the Heppner Mustang girls’
basketball team this week-
end at the Columbia Basin
Conference District Tour-
nament. The Mustangs lost
to the Weston-McEwen
TigerScots by a score of 56-
37. Heppner ended the sea-
son with a record of 10-13
overall, and they finished
third in their conference
with a 4-6 record.
The Mustangs, who
had trouble with the Tiger-
Scot pressure all game long,
trailed at the end of the first
quarter 11-7. Several turn-
overs led to easy baskets for
Weston-McEwen, and they
stretched their lead to 26-19
at halftime. The Mustangs
rallied in the third quarter
and got to within two points
late in the frame. Heppner
did outscore their opponent
in the third quarter, but by
the slimmest of margins,
8-7. That made the score
at the end of three quarters
33-27. The TigerScots took
over in the fourth quarter
and outscored the Mustangs
23-12. That made the final
score of the game 56-37.
Kelly Wilson led the
team with 15 points. She
also had 3 rebounds, 4
assists and 4 steals. Mor-

team. Maddie Lindsay had
6 points and 10 rebounds
for the Mustangs. Jessica
Kempkin had a busy night
as she scored 4 points,
hauled down 7 rebounds
and had 3 steals. Paige
Grieb also scored 4 points
and she had 1 rebound for
the game. Kacie Gray was
the only other Mustang to
score and she had 2 points.
Macy Gibbs gave the team
some valuable minutes de-
fensively, and she collected
1 rebound for her efforts.
The Mustangs will lose
four seniors off of the team
this year. They are Kelly
Wilson, Maddie Lindsay,
Paige Grieb and Macy
Gibbs. For next year, the
Mustangs will return nine
players who played in var-
sity games this season.

Several Mustangs were honored at the Columbia Basin Confer-

Center last weekend. These awards are voted on by the coaches
of all the teams in the conference, and a coach cannot vote for
his own players. Aside from Mustang players who received
recognition, Coach Jeremy Rosenbalm was the unanimous
choice for coach of the year. Top (L-R): Logan Grieb, First

In addition to placing
second at the district tour-
nament and receiving sev-
eral all-conference nods,
the Heppner High School
boys’ basketball team also
won a special season-long
award, the Pat Gillette Me-
morial Award. This is the
text of the letter the team
received announcing the
award:
“Each basketball sea-
son the Blue Mountain
Basketball Officials Asso-
ciation makes an award to
the school that is served by
the association that consis-
tently exhibits outstanding
sportsmanship and ‘class’
at all levels throughout the
season.
At the end of the sea-
son schools are nominated
and then voted on by the
association membership.
Consideration is given to
the coaches and players, as
well as the school admin-
istration, the student body
and the fans.
Congratulations to the
Heppner Boys Basketball
Program for being selected
as the 2014-2015 recipient
of this Award.”
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team is ad-
vancing to the OSAA State
Basketball playoffs. The
Mustangs won their first
game at the Columbia Basin
Conference District Tour-
nament to earn the right to
continue their season. Hep-
pner beat the Stanfield Ti-
gers by the score of 60-59 to
advance to the playoffs. On
the second day of the CBC
tournament, the Mustangs
lost to the Irrigon Knights
in the district championship
game by a score of 67-36.
In the game with the
Tigers, Heppner started
out the game by missing
several shots close to the
basket. The Mustangs fell
behind early by the score of
8-0. Their tournament “jit-
ters” quickly faded and the
team began to play better.
Their shots started falling
and they closed the gap
and only trailed 12-10 at
the end of the first quarter.
Heppner came out strong
in the second quarter and
outscored Stanfield 16-15.
The score at halftime was
27-26 in favor of the Tigers.
The third quarter was
back and forth as both teams
had the lead at one time or
the other. Heppner ended up
winning the quarter 20-17
to take a 46-44 advantage
into the fourth quarter. It
was a tight contest for the
entire fourth quarter. The
score was tied 50-50 with
just a little over five minutes
left in the game. Heppner
then held a lead of 56-52
with 2:40 left in the game.
A Stanfield three-point play
gave the Tigers the lead
59-58 with :48 seconds left
in game. The Mustangs
brought the ball up the
floor and worked it around
against some stiff Stanfield
defense. CJ Kindle then
found Logan Grieb open
near the middle of the key
and passed him the ball
as the clock was winding
down. Grieb was able to
catch the ball in some traffic
and put up a shot that went
in to give the Mustangs a
60-59 lead with :05 seconds
left in the game. Stanfield
inbounded the ball and at-
tempted a long shot at the
buzzer that did not go in.
That miss gave the Mus-
tangs an exciting 60-59
victory and propelled them
into the district champion-
ship game.

a big night as he had 18

assist. Grieb was next with
13 points, seven rebounds,
1 assist and 1 blocked shot.
Ross Cutsforth scored 11
points, had 4 rebounds, 1
blocked shot and 1 steal
for the Mustangs. Weston
Putman contributed 9 big
points, 4 rebounds and 1
assist in the game. Kevin
Murray came in and gave
his team some solid min-
utes with 5 points and 2 re-
bounds. Kindle had a good
all-around game with 4
points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists
and 1 steal. Jesse Corbin
had 1 rebound and 1 assist
in the game while Caden
Hedman recorded 3 assists
to his teammates.
The Mustangs shot 48
percent from the field in the
game and outrebounded the
Tigers 33-22.
After giving every-
thing they had in this game,
the Mustangs had to turn
around and play the district
championship game against
the Irrigon Knights less
than 24 hours later. The
Knights are the number-one
ranked team in the state
and showed everyone in at-
tendance that they are very
good. Irrigon jumped out to
a quick 16-9 lead after the
first quarter and extended
its lead to 34-16 at halftime.
They kept the pressure on
the Mustangs for the entire
second half and won the
game by a score of 67-36.
Once again Collins had
a double-double with 10
points and 12 rebounds.
He also had a blocked
shot in the game. Putman
scored 8 points and had 4
rebounds. Grieb was next
with 6 points, 3 rebounds
and 2 assists. Cutsforth fol-
lowed with 4 points and 6
rebounds for the Mustangs.
Kindle scored 2 points and
had 1 assist, and Hedman
also had 2 points, 1 rebound
and 1 assist. Corbin record-
ed 2 points in the game for
his team. Jerimiah Petzoldt
had 1 rebound and Jake
Lindsay dished out 2 assists
and pulled down 1 rebound.
Heppner continued
their streak of outrebound-
ing every team they have
played this season as they
bested the Knights on the
glass by a count of 31-18.
The Mustangs are now
17-5 on the season and are
the third-ranked team in
the state. They will host
an OSAA State Basketball
playoff game at 6 p.m. on
Friday night against the
Faith Bible Falcons from
Hillsboro. The Falcons are
the third-place team from
the Northwest League and
have a record of 13-12.
They finished the season
as the 16 th ranked team in
the state.
