Lady Cards end regular season with two Ione elementary choir
performs for
wins, secure district cross-over spot
Lady Cards fought hard
for the win
Last Tuesday night the
Ione Lady Cardinals hosted
the Hood River Horizon
Christian team. Ione had
played them before with no
success, but the Lady Cards
needed to win this game to
secure their position in the
cross-over district game
coming up this Wednesday.
“This was a big win for
us and secured a spot in the
post season, and that was
goal number one for the
team,” stated Coach Mike
Garrett.
This game was within
a one-point margin every
quarter. The home-town
crowd’s and community
band’s energy was pushing
the team on. It came down
to the last few minutes and
Ione pulled out a win, 36
to 32.

to South Wasco having to
win to get into the district
tournament. We played
a great first half but we
were unable to match South
Wasco intensity in the third
quarter. The fourth was fun
to coach with both teams
playing well, and the Wasco
crowd was really loud; it
was a good experience for
the kids moving forward,”

Ione played a great

They worked hard, but
at the last few minutes,
with South Wasco making
their foul shots, the oppos-
ing team pulled forward
enough to win the game.

Ione girls’ varsity wins
over Spray for last game
of the season
The Lady Cards had
a great last game at home
Saturday night. It was also
Ione’s senior night for sev-
eral of their JV and varsity
players. In a packed gym,
the tip-off turned into Ione’s
first two points with a great
play by Rachel Holland,
Jessie Flynn and senior
Lauren Garrett. This set the
pace and the mood for the
entire game.
At halftime, Spray led
by two points after both
Lauren Garrett and Morgan
Orem shot their free throws
after being fouled in the last
few seconds of the second
quarter; 17 to 19 was the
score in Spray’s favor.
Ione came back with
determination and started
making their plays pay off
with baskets each time.
With several steals the Lady
Cards brought their score
up to a 38 to 26 lead with
one minute left in the game.
But Spray wasn’t ready to
go home. They made three
baskets, making the score
38 to 31, but Ione played
strong defense and made
one last foul shot, making
the final score Ione 39 and
Spray 31.
“This was a great way
to end the regular season
with a win at home on
Senior Night. I thought we
were showing some fatigue
in the first half after the
game against South Wasco
the night before, but the
kids came out in the second
half and played well. With
the win we wrapped up the
fifth seed for districts and
we are looking forward to
the post season. The girls
are playing their best bas-
ketball right now and that
has everyone very excited.
We are a very young team
and will have 10 of our 12
kids back next year, so this
experience is very valuable
long term, as well,” stated
Garrett.

from Boston College and

teachers and administrators
from small, rural schools
to work together on com-
mon standards and student
engagement strategies that
will help students learn to
their fullest potential.
Five teachers—Lea
Mathieu, Linda Neiffer, Di-
ana McElligott, Steve Scha-
ber and Torrie Dowdy—
join Principal Sarah Crane
in the network and say
they enjoy partnering with
teachers from Genessee, ID
all the way to Powers, OR.
Currently, there are 14
small school districts from
Oregon, Washington and
Idaho involved in the net-
