The Heppner Mustang
girls’ basketball team once
again split its Columbia Ba-
sin Conference games last
week. The girls avenged an
earlier loss to the Stanfield
Tigers by winning in domi-
nating fashion by a score of
54-39. They then travelled
to play the Irrigon Knights.
Heppner had beaten this
team earlier in the year, but
lost to them this time by a
score of 44-30.
The press and pressure
that Stanfield uses to force
teams into turnovers did
not bother the Mustangs.
In fact, Heppner broke the
press and scored multiple
easy baskets all game long.
The Mustangs raced out
to a 15-8 lead after one
quarter of play. They then
stretched the lead to 26-15
at halftime.
Stanfield did come back
and outscore the Mustangs
15-9 in the third quarter.
The Heppner team forced
the action in the fourth
quarter and blew away the
Tigers by outscoring them
19-9. That made the final
score 54-39.
Maddie Lindsay and
Kelly Wilson both score 17
points in the game. Lindsay
also had 10 rebounds, 1
assist and 1 steal. Wilson
collected 7 rebounds, had
2 assists and 2 steals for
the team. Sophie Grant
followed with 10 points
and 1 assist for the Mus-
tangs. Paige Grieb re-
corded 4 points, 4 assists
and 2 rebounds in a good
all-around game. Jessica
Kempkin scored 3 points,
had 6 rebounds, 2 steals
and 1 blocked shot. Rylee
Kollman had 2 points to
go along with 1 assist in
the game. Morgan Cor-
rea scored 1 point, had 4
rebounds, 1 assist and 1
blocked shot.
In the game with Ir-
rigon, the Mustangs only
trailed by one at the end
of the first quarter, 7-6. It
was the second quarter that
really hurt the team. They
were outscored 15-4 and
trailed at halftime by a score
of 22-10.
Heppner doubled up
the Knights in the third
quarter 16-8, to pull within
four points at 30-26 as the
final quarter started. Hep-
pner had a hard time scoring
in the fourth quarter and
were outscored 14-4. That
made the final score 44-30
in favor of Irrigon.
Wilson led the team
in scoring with 17. She
also had 7 rebounds and 2
steals. Grant was next with
6 points and 4 rebounds in
the game. Kempkin scored
4 points, had 5 rebounds, 1
assist and 1 blocked shot.
Macy Gibbs recorded 2
points for the Mustangs.
Maddie Lindsay scored 1
point, had 10 rebounds, 2
assists and 1 steal. Grieb
contributed 3 assists and 1
blocked shot, and Kollman
had 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
Correa had 5 rebounds and
1 steal on the night.
The Mustangs (8-11,
3-5) have two games left
in the regular season. This
Friday night they travel
to Athena to take on the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
Scots. Their final game of
the regular season will be
on Saturday when they host
the Culver Bulldogs. This
will be senior night, and the
Mustangs will honor their
seniors and their families.
The Mustang seniors are
Macy Gibbs, Maddie Lind-
say, Kelly Wilson and Paige
Grieb.
