The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team won
its third conference game
in a row when they boys
grounded the flight of the
Pilot Rock Rockets by a
score of 69-30. The Mus-
tangs’ overall record is now
13-3 for the season and 4-2
in Blue Mountain Confer-
ence play.
Heppner started fast
and raced out to a quick
lead in the game, leading
27-4 after one quarter. Great
defensive play by the team
continued to limit the Rock-
ets’ scoring opportunities,
and Heppner led 45-14 at
halftime.
In the third quarter the
Mustangs worked on some
different defensive schemes
that they may need later on
in the season. They also
were able to take a look at
some other offensive sets
that they have been working
on in practice. Heppner out-
scored the Rockets 18-9 in
the quarter and led the game
63-23 entering the fourth
quarter. The teams played
the last quarter close and
the final score of the game
was 69-30.
Patrick Collins record-
ed another double-double
with 22 points and 13 re-
bounds. He also contrib-
uted 3 blocked shots and 1
steal. Logan Grieb had the
hot hand from beyond the
three-point line as he hit 4
of them on his way to 15
points on the night. He also
had 6 rebounds, 3 assists
and 1 steal. Weston Put-
man scored 14 points and
had 5 rebounds to go along
with 3 assists and 1 steal.
Ross Cutsforth chipped in
with 6 points and 10 big
rebounds in the game. Ross
also had 4 assists, 2 steals
and 1 blocked shot. Jesse
Corbin had 5 points and 1
assist for the Mustangs. CJ
Kindle had a good game
with 2 points, 4 rebounds,
5 assists and 1 steal. Jer-
emiah Petzoldt came in and

net during the game versus
the Rockets. Collins was the

night. -Photo by Sandra Put-
man
had a good showing with
2 points, 2 rebounds and 1
assist. Kolby Currin netted
2 points in the game and
Caden Hedman scored 1
point and had 2 rebounds.
Jake Lindsay had 1 rebound
and 1 assist and Kevin
Murray came in and gave
a good defensive effort for
the team.
Heppner shot 47 per-
cent from the field for the
game and held Pilot Rock
to only 27 percent shoot-
ing. Heppner dominated the
boards as they outrebound-
ed the Rockets 43-21. The
Mustangs moved the ball
well and looked to find the
open man. They had 18
assists on their 26 baskets
made in the game.
The Mustangs, who
are currently the fourth-
ranked team in the state,
have a tough week ahead
of them. On Tuesday night
they play the number-three
ranked Stanfield Tigers at

Mustang girls shot down by
Rockets in league play
The Heppner Mustang
girls’ basketball team lost
its Columbia Basin Confer-
ence game against the Pilot
Rock Rockets by a score of
43-29. The Rockets are the
top team in the CBC and
have not been beaten in
conference play.
Heppner struggled to
score in the first half of
play. The Rockets came out
and shot the ball well. They
made several three-pointers
in the first quarter to jump
out to a quick lead in the
game. The Mustangs trailed
at the end of the first quarter
19-5 and it was 33-11 at
halftime.
The Heppner team
came out strong in the third
quarter and outscored the
Rockets 11-6 to get back
into the game. The Mustang
girls also won the fourth
quarter by a score of 7-4.
Their second-half play was
not enough to overcome
the slow start in the first
quarter. The teams played
evenly in the last three
quarters, but it was the first
quarter that doomed the
Mustangs. The final score
of the game ended up 43-29
in favor of the Rockets.

week’s tussle with the Rockets. Despite dominating the sec-
ond half, the girls lost to the Pilot Rock team. Below: Kelly

end, contributing six points against the Rockets. -Photos by

Leading the way in
scoring for the Mustangs
was Maddie Lindsay with
12. Kelly Wilson had 6
points and Paige Grieb
followed with 4. Jessica
Kempkin and Morgan Cor-
rea each scored 3 points in
the game and Sophie Grant
had 2.
The Mustangs take
on the Stanfield Tigers on
Tuesday night and then
travel to Irrigon on Friday
to play the Knights.
