Mustangs take 11 th
at wrestling classic
Mustang wrestlers attended the Oregon Wrestling Classic in
Redmond last weekend. More than 80 high-school teams were
expected at the two-day dual-match tournament that began
with four pools in each of the state’s five wrestling classifica-
tions, setting up competition in 16-team brackets. Heppner
placed 11 th in the 2A tournament after placing third in pool
play. The Mustangs were at a disadvantage going in, with sev-
eral empty weight slots, but pulled out an 18-12 win over Crane
to end their weekend on a high note. Five Mustangs earned at
least two wins by pinfall over the weekend. Ryan Smith (113
lbs), pictured top, led the way with four, while Jorgen Anderson
(160 lbs), pictured bottom, and Jacob Moses (145 lbs) each had
three. –Photos by Kandy Boyd

close weekend
The Heppner Mustang
girls basketball team got
a split of their conference
games this weekend. They
beat the Irrigon Knights
58-45 and then lost to the
Stanfield Tigers 43-40.
In the game against
Irrigon, it was a total team
effort as 12 different Mus-
tang players saw time in
the game. Heppner jumped
out to an 11-5 lead after one
quarter and led the game
24-17 at halftime. They put
some real distance between
themselves and the Knights
as they outscored them 19-9
in the third quarter. A close
fourth quarter led to the
final score of 58-45.

the team with 19 points

Both teams scored 18
second-half points in the
closely-contested game.
The Mustangs did get a
chance to tie the game with
just seconds left. They got
the ball back but had to go
the length of the floor and
were not able to get the shot
up in time. The final score
was 43-40.

had 15 points. She also had
4 rebounds and 1 steal.

If it’s not enough to
play in arguably the stron-
gest 2A basketball confer-
ence in the state, where
every night and every game
can be a difficult challenge,
you then have to play two of
the top-ranked teams in the
state in back-to-back games
on the same weekend.
That was the tall order
that the Heppner Mustang
boys basketball team faced
this past weekend. On Fri-
day night they played the
Irrigon Knights and lost a
hard-fought battle 59-48.
The team then travelled to
Stanfield the next day and
were beaten by the Tigers
by a score of 51-46.
In the current OSAA
2A State Basketball rank-
ings, the Knights are ranked
number one, Stanfield is
second and the Mustangs
follow in third.
The Heppner team
knew that they would be
in for a real tough game
with the Knights. They are
the defending state cham-
pions and returned many
of the key players off that
team. In the first quarter,
the Mustangs handled the
Irrigon press well and broke
it several times for easy

scores, but it was still 15-12
in favor of the Knights after
one period.
Heppner then out-
scored the Knights in the
second quarter to only trail
21-20 at the half. Another
close quarter of play saw
the score tied with :45 left
in the third. A quick three,
a steal and laying gave Ir-
rigon a 42-37 lead at the
end of three quarters of
play. The Knights then out-
scored the Mustangs 17-11
in fourth quarter to get the
win by the score of 59-48.
Leading the way for
the Mustangs was Patrick
Collins with 24 points and
13 rebounds. He also had 1
assist and 1 blocked shot.
Logan Grieb followed
with 10 points, 4 rebounds,
3 assists and 1 blocked
shot. Ross Cutsforth had a
good all-around game with
5 points, 5 rebounds, 4
blocked shots and 1 assist.
Weston Putman also scored
5 points in the game and
had 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
CJ Kindle had 4 points, 4
rebounds and 4 assists for
the Mustangs. Caden Hed-
man saw some action and
recorded 1 rebound and 1
assist for the team.
After giving everything
they had in Friday night’s
game, the team had to travel
to Stanfield and take on a
quality team that finished
third at the state tournament
last year. The Mustangs
started out fast and led
after the first quarter 14-
7. Heppner continued its
strong play and led 32-23
at halftime.
Stanfield came out in
the third quarter and shot
the ball well. They out-
scored the Mustangs 18-10
in the quarter to only trail
42-41. Early in the fourth
quarter they scored to take
the lead for the first time
since the 2-0 score at the
beginning of the game.
Logan Grieb then sank a
triple to tie the score back
up at 45-45 with a little
more than five minutes to
play. The Mustangs went
cold form there and could
only score one more point.
The Tigers went on to win
the game 51-46.
Grieb led the team in
scoring with 13. He also had
4 rebounds and 4 assists in
the game. Collins recorded
his second double-double
for the weekend with 10
points and 11 rebounds.
He also had 2 assists and
1 blocked shot. Putman
contributed 9 points and 6
rebounds, and Jesse Corbin
had 7 points and 3 rebounds
for the team. Kindle had 3
points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists
and 1 steal for the Mus-
tangs while Cutsforth had
2 points and 6 rebounds.
Kevin Murray also scored
2 in the game and Hedman
had 1 rebound.
The Mustangs are 10-3
overall and 1-2 in confer-
ence play. They take on the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
Scots at home on Friday
night. They then travel to
Culver to take on the Bull-
dogs on Saturday. A sched-
ule change at Culver will
have both JV teams playing
at 1 p.m. in different gyms,
with boys varsity to follow
and the girls to play last.
Both varisty games will be
held in the main gym.
How are You Treating Jesus?
If Jesus were physically on earth today, how would
you like to take him to lunch? Or volunteer to wash
his car? Well, you may just have that opportunity!
Jesus said, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one
of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it
unto me." (Matt. 25:40) Abstract love needs to be
carried to mature completion by expressing it in a
practical way. (I John 3:16-18) I think, if we treat
each person just as if he were Jesus, we will do
okay in interpersonal relationships.
