The Gazette-Times will
be closed Thursday, Jan.

Normal business hours will
resume Friday, Jan. 2.
The view from near Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner Tuesday shows something more like a winter wonderland than folks around here are used to see
We wish everyone a ing. The snow didn't arrive in time for a white Christmas, but the area did receive a blanket of white just in time for the New Year. The Arctic temperatures

ODWF announces
new area o f known
wolf activity in
Desolation Unit
A new Area of Known
Wolf Activity (AKWA)has
been designated by ODFW
(Oregon Dept, of Fish and
Wildlife) in the northern
portion of the Desolation
Unit (Grant and Umatilla
counties).
On Dec. 15, tracks of
two wolves were docu
mented by ODFW biolo
gists in this new area.
Irregular reports o f
w olf activity have been
received over the past year
in this general area of na
tional forest, and biologists
documented two instances
of a single wolf earlier in
the year.
However, AKWAs are
created where and when
wolves have become estab
lished, meaning repeated
use of an area over a period
of time by wolves and not
simply dispersal of wolves.
At this time, ODFW
has little data regarding the
specifics o f this new pair
(i.e., sex, breeding status,
and specific use area).
The agency reports that
additional surveys will be
required to get this infor
mation.
