Chrisma will be
presented at HUMC
this week
The second week Ad
vent begins with the pre
sentation of the Chrismons
at Heppner United Method
ist Church. For those not
familiar with these beauti
fully spiritual pieces o f
art, here is a little history:
“Chrismon” is a combina
tion of parts of two words:
Christ and monogram. A
Chrismon is just that—a
monogram of Christ.
According to the dic
tionary definition, a chris
mon is the Chi Rho mono
gram of Christ. The plural
is chrism a; the word is
not capitalized. Ascension
Lutheran Church adopted
this word to designate the
special Christmas tree or
naments that this church
developed because the first
designs were all based on
chrisma. In this usage, the
word Chrismon is capi
talized, and the plural is
Anglicized to Chrismons.
Over the years these orna
ments have developed so
that now a Chrismon may
be a monogram, a sign, a
symbol, a type, or a com
bination o f such figures.
The one requirement is that
it refer primarily to Jesus
Christ.
At Heppner UMC, the
Chrismons used were cre
ated many years ago by
Peggy and Earl Fishburn
and Debbie Koffler. The
tree in the sanctuary, on
which the chrisma will be
placed, was provided by
Frank Osmin.
The HUMC choir, un
der the direction of Jean
Brazell, will sing “In the
Bleak Midwinter.” Hymns
will include “O Come, O
Come Emmanuel,” “Angels
from the Realms of Glory”
and “This is a Day of New
B eg in n in g s.” S cripture
from Peter and Mark will
be read by liturgist Merle
Cowett. The celebration
of Holy Communion will
be held.
It's also potluck Sun
day, and everyone is wel
comed to gather for a time
of food, fun and fellowship
following the service.
Service begins at 10:30
a m. All are welcome. The
Heppner United Methodist
Church is located at 175
West Church St. For more
