Fundraiser planned
for woman having
kidney transplant
Sheila Piper, Heppner,
is going through a five-
stage process for a kidney
transplant. She is currently
at the second stage of this
process, in which she re­
cently met with her trans­
plant nephrologist (kid­
ney doctor specializing in
transplants) to identify the
appropriate laboratory and
diagnostic tests for her.
Sheila will eventually
have her transplant and will
need to stay in the hospital
in the critical care unit
approximately five days,
and then will return to the
transplant clinic three times
a week for follow-up care.
Because o f the frequent
visits, she will need to live
close to the hospital for
three months before be­
ing transferred back to the
care of her original kidney
specialist for regular ongo­
ing care.
The av erag e first-
year billed charges for a
transplant are more than
$650,000. While surgery
may be covered by health
insurance, pre-transplant
medical services and post­
transplant maintenance are
often not covered, leav­
ing patients and families

Donor. For any donation
made to Sheila’s fundraiser,
donors will be able to pick
a mini safety light that at­
taches to a keychain (vari­
ous colors to choose from).
A medical account also has
been set up at Bank of East­
ern Oregon, and donations
made be made directly to
that account.
Kidney donors are al­
ways needed, and Sheila
is looking for a match.

Gift boxes to help
make ends meet this
holiday season
Forty boxes filled to the brim with food and personal
hygiene products are being assembled for gifting to those
who could use a little help making ends meet this time
of year.
A box may be picked up this Sunday, Nov. 23, be­
tween 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the back door of All Saints
Episcopal Church (accessed from Gale Street parking lot),
no questions asked. Home delivery is available for those
who are unable to pick up a box by calling 541 -676-9970
and leaving a detailed message.
This gift is the joint effort of local churches, and is
given in gratitude for many blessings received.
Lexington Grange to
hold craft sale
A craft sale is planned
at the Lexington Grange
Nov. 22-23. Grange mem­
bers say doors will be open
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry
fee is $2 or two canned food
items. Proceeds will be do­
nated to a local food bank.
The Grange is in the
process of installing a new
h eatin g system , which
members say won’t be in
place in time for the sale.
However, Grange members
want to assure the public
that they w on’t freeze if
they attend the craft sale;
portable heaters will be in
place to keep the building
toasty for both vendors and
shoppers.
Also available to help
keep attendees warm will
be a $5 soup feed, as well
as a bake sale.

Support the Irrigon
library branch
To the Editor:
We are writing in support of Director Marsha Rich­
mond and the Oregon Trail Library District Board’s
actions as they move through the legal steps to open the
Oregon Trail Library District Irrigon Branch.
It is in the interest of all Morrow County residents to
urge all parties involved to support a positive and timely
resolution to this issue.
The residents of Irrigon need and deserve the new
and improved library.

FFA joins with
Neighborhood Center
to keep people warm
Through the Heppner FFA, a group of local girls is
sponsoring a coat drive from Nov. 17 to Dec. 19. The
coats will given to the Neighborhood Center in Heppner.
Coats of all sizes are accepted and the girls say any­
thing is greatly appreciated. Collection tubs are located
at Les Schwab. Fleppner Family Foods, Bank of Eastern
Oregon, Heppner Elementary School and Heppner High
School.
Anyone who needs or knows someone who needs
a winter coat is encouraged to visit the Neighborhood
Center.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday next week, the Hep­
pner United Methodist Church Women have rescheduled
their Last Wednesday Game Night at the Methodist
Church to this Wednesday, Nov. 19, beginning at 6:30
p.m. Board and card games of all kind will be available
to play. The event is free and open to the public. Refresh­
ments will be served.
The Heppner United Methodist Church is located at
the comer of Church and Gale Streets in Heppner.
The next lunch meeting of the Heppner Chamber of
Commerce will be Thursday, Nov. 20, at noon in Heppner
City Hall conference room. Caitlynn Bailey will give a
presentation on the Heppner FFA chapter’s recent trip to
Washington, D.C.
