A town to always
remember
M any hands keep
Heppner litter-free
To the Editor
I’ll never forget when my wife and I first arrived in
the town of Heppner with a three-year-old and a new
baby. It was the fall of 1987. The hills were brown, and
the town didn't seem particularly beautiful. We had no
idea that we would spend the next 21 years raising six
children in this community.
We soon learned what made Heppner such a great
place to live—the warmth of the people. Through the
years, I got to know so many wonderful people while
pastoring and working for the school district, the cem
etery, and Pettyjohn’s.
It was a privilege to serve on the city council, serve
as mayor, belong to the chamber of commerce, and coach
the sport I love, basketball. I enjoyed watching my kids
play sports, and I equally enjoyed watching many of your
kids play sports as they grew up.
I’ll never forget when my son returned from the Navy
and thanked me for raising him in Heppner. Working
with people from such different backgrounds had shown
him the value of being raised in this small, closely-knit
community. You helped shape us and our children into
the people we are today. We still miss Heppner dearly.
(s) Tim Van Cleave, Pendleton, OR
To the Editor:
Last Friday night we went and watched the Mustangs
play the Culver Bulldogs. We are proud of the way the
Mustang coaches and players handled themselves against
the most unsportsmanlike conduct we have ever seen a
team play.
Thank you Mustangs for showing the class that you
have.

To the editor:
Heppner is a clean and litter-free town. This is be
cause a lot of organizations and individual citizens make
a continuing effort to keep our community looking good
for ourselves and our visitors.
It is time now to do a fall tidy-up for the winter sea
son. The Heppner Chamber of Commerce, the Heppner
Lions Club, the Bank of Eastern Oregon employees, the
Heppner Elementary School staff and the Morrow County
employee groups all have adopted segments of the state
highways in town and on the approaches to town under
the Oregon Department of Transportation Litter Pick Up
Program. The ODOT sponsorship and support of this
program is gratefully acknowledged. Additionally, the
employees of the U.S. Forest Service Heppner Ranger
District do litter pick-up on Willow Creek Road from the
junction with State Highway 207 to the upper end of the
Willow Creek Reservoir. Also, the City of Heppner Public
Works Department puts forth considerable effort on street
sweeping and trash receptacle maintenance.
The efforts of these organizations and individual
community members all contribute to keeping Heppner
looking good. Keep up the good work!
