5, and Wednesday, Aug. 6,
at Pioneer Memorial Clinic.
Girls’ physicals will be
on Aug. 5 from 1:30-5 p.m.
on a walk-in basis. Boys’
physicals will be on Aug.
6 from 1:30-5 p.m. on a
walk-in basis.
H o w e v e r , i f th e
designated day will not
work, students may come
on the other scheduled day.
Sports physicals are
required for any student
who has not had a physical
in the past year, including
firs t-y e a r ju n io r high
p a rtic ip a n ts and sixth
graders playing at the junior
high level, and transfer
students who do not have a
copy of an OSAA physical
completed in the past year.

Bates family selected as Grand Marshals
of Gilliam County Fair

‘ W heat, W ind and
Wagon W h eels’ is the
theme of the 2014 Gilliam
County Fair and the Bates
Family has been named
the 2014 Grand Marshals.
The C ounty F air w ill
feature exhibits, animals,
a C h ild re n ’s Fair, fun
activities on the midway
and music for everyone, a
talent competition, an ATV
rodeo, and the Oregon High
School Rodeo Association
season kickoff rodeo. The
fair will be held August
28-31 at the Gilliam County
Fairgrounds in Condon.
P lanning is in full
production for the 2014 fair.
Gilliam County residents
can expect to see the High
School Rodeo Sunday,
August 31, and Monday,
S e p t. 1, o p e n i n g up
Saturday for an expanded
ATV rodeo. In addition,
there will be other changes
throughout the fair so fair-
goers and participants are
encouraged to see the new
and improved schedule in
the fair book.
I'he Fair Board is proud
to honor the historic Bates
Family of the Condon area
as the 2014 Grand Marshals.
In 1948, Ed and Lorraine
Bates bought the Cook
Estate and began farming
wheat on its 2,300 acres.
Bates Ranches has been
continuously farmed since
that time. In addition, the
couple has been involved
in a variety of community
groups and organizations,
including Condon Baptist
Church, the Grange, and of
course, the Gilliam County
Fair. Over the years, five
children were bom to the
couple, most still reside in
the area — Wayne, Bruce
(now in Burley, Idaho),
Shirley (Burrows), Paul and
Dale, now in Heppner. They

Class o f ’58 reunion well-attended
The Heppner High
School Class of '58 held
its reunion last month.
Thirteen classmates and
some spouses attended out
of the 26 who graduated
together that year.
The reunion started
with a gathering on Friday,
June 20. in Butch and Judie
Laugh I in’s back yard. The
weather was pronounced
perfect, and the group was
able to enjoy a variety of
snacks and drinks as they
visited.
Breakfast on Saturday,
June 21, was held at Sweet
Productions, where owner
Jodi Segraves opened her
restaurant for the class.
A picnic of hot dogs and
hamburgers with a potluck
of sides was held Saturday
afternoon at the Morrow
County Fairgrounds. Kirk
Holcomb, the Laughlin’s
son-in-law, was chef, while
the results for the recent
tournament at Echo Hills
July 1. R esults are as

Watermelon Festival
The City of Irrigon will
hold its annual Watermelon
Festival on Saturday, July
26.
Several event s are
planned to take place all
day long beginning at 6:30
a.m.; funds raised in this
community event go to
benefit various areas across
the community of Irrigon,
including graduating
scholarships, Cooley Sports
Complex, the senior center,
food baskets program, flags
for events, and more.
