Ecumenical women's
salad supper May 12
The annual ecumenical women’s salad supper will
be held on Monday, May 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This
year’s event will be hosted by the Shared Ministry o f All
Saints Episcopal Church and Hope Lutheran Church, and
will be held at the All Saints parish hall at the comer of
Church and Gale in Heppner.
The Hopeful Saints M ission Trippers will share
stories and pictures o f their well-building adventures in
Guatemala.
Women who attend are asked to bring a salad to share.
Desserts and beverages will be provided.

April 27, just nine months
after she celeb rated her
100th birth d ay . M orrow
County lost one of its oldest
residents.
M ary w as born July
27, 1913 in Heppner, one
o f seven c h ild re n born
to Robert and LaVonnie
G am m ell. She atten d ed
sch o o ls in H eppner. In
1934, she m arried Ralph
Beamer, who had moved
to this area from Virginia.
They lived in Heppner,
wher e Ralph had a
delivery business, for a
short while. Mary became
a ranch w ife when they
bought the C harles Cox
wheat ranch southwest of
Heppner. During that era
o f no electricity or indoor
plum bing M ary becam e
adept at providing for their
fam ily and tu rn in g out
nutritious meals minus any
modern appliances. Later
she blessed the convenience
when electricity became the
norm on ranches.
Mary and Ralph had
two children. R. Neil was
born June 20, 1936 and
Janice Jean Bothum was
bom July 14. 1940. As their
family grew, so did their
holdings, when they moved
to the Quaid place on Balm .

the family home.

range. M ary and Ralph
both becam e involved in
the cutting-horse world and
raised some w ell-know n
American Quarter Horses
that m ade their m ark in
competitive events.
T h o u g h Ma r y w as
often a behind-the-scenes
type o f p erso n , she too
w on a cham pion saddle
and other awards in cutting-
horse competitions.
As their children
developed their own horse
interests, Mary and Ralph
proudly supported Neil as
his rodeo skills resulted in
wi ni ng calf-roping titles
in the Professional Rodeo
Association circuit.
With lots o f help from
bot h Ma r y a nd Ral ph,
Janice also became an avid
horse person. She w ent
on to become a Pendleton
Roundup Princess, followed
by her reign as both Miss
N orthw est Rodeo Queen
and as Miss Rodeo Oregon.
M ary w as a ty p ical
old-fashioned ranch wife.
T hroughout her life, her
prim ary focus was doing
for others as a wife, mother,
g ran d m o th er and g re a t­
grandmother. Her love o f

the Western lifestyle was
reflected in the books she
read and the m usic she
enjoyed. Her favorite artists
were George Straight and
the Statler Brothers.
Mary had artistic talent
o f her own, which led to
creating oil paintings and
w riting poetry. Later in
life she becam e adept at
golfing and bowling but she
seldom missed a PBR bull­
riding event on television.
M eals that she prepared
for h a rv e st crew s w ere
enhanced by produce that
she grew in her own large
garden for many years. She
also tended a yard garden
with many flowers.

was held Saturday, May
3, at the Heppner Masonic
Cemetery at 10 a.m. Pastor
Tim VanCleve, Pendleton,
officiated. A celebration
o f M ary’s 100 years o f life
followed at the St. Patrick’s
Senior Center in Heppner
with a large gathering of
family and friends.
Chamber lunch meeting
The next lunch meeting o f the Heppner Chamber of
Commerce will be Thursday, May 15. at noon in Heppner
City Hall conference room. Cam Preus, president of
BMCC, will be the guest speaker.
Cost o f lunch is $10; M urray’s will cater. Chamber
lunch attendees are asked to RSVP at 541-676-5536 no
later than the Wednesday before to guarantee a lunch.
