much God must love her,
the disciples, and all people
to have resurrected G od’s
Son, Jesus Christ, and sent
him back to her, to all of
them, even those who just
hours before betrayed and
deserted him.
Jesus’ instructions for
her, once she recognizes
him, are not to hold onto
him because he has not yet
ascended to God. She is to
proclaim what she has seen,
experienced and heard—
that Jesus has risen— and
to tell them he is soon
ascending to heaven back
to God. In a very real sense
she is to tell them that Love
has risen up, is returning
to God. and is now calling
their names.
Most of us either have
been in the place of darkness
or know someone who has
been there, and what it is
like. We know what it is
like to be at the bottom
o f a physical, em otional
and spiritual pit, or to be
sinking helplessly into the
deep end o f what seems
like a bottomless pool. We
know what it is like to feel
p aralyzed by the things
that have happened to us
and all around us and to
feel as if we cannot pull
ourselves out. The Good
News is that just when we
feel we have endured more
than we can stand there is a
moment o f rescue, of loving
resurrection, a realization of
how much God must love
us and that God has blessed
us. We look at things and
realize all the old sorrow,
pain and despair has been
wiped away and we stand
dripping wet. but alive and
w hole, safe outside that
darkness, outside that deep
pit or pool.
We discover when we
are at the cen ter o f our
darkness that Jesus walked
through that darkness also.
We discover that as Jesus
arises out of the darkness,
his Love calls out to us.
Love is calling each one of
us by name. And Jesus pulls
us up out o f it beh ind h im by
our hands. His resurrection
means ours too. Because
o f Jesus’ resurrection we
know that the d ark n ess

J e s u s ’ re s u rre c tio n we
know sorrow and death
cannot conquer us, they
do not have the final word
in our lives. Because of
his resurrection, we know
G od's Love defeats death
a n d c o n q u e r s al l t he
darkness that smoothers us.
Jesus is risen and his
people have been called
by name, and now we have
been set loose in the world
to make a difference in it
because o f his great Love
for us. A nd again Love
has risen up and is calling
each o f us by name to go
like Mary Magdalene did
and tell others that Love
has ris e n up an d it is
calling us by nam e into
an amazing and wonderful
new creation! Amen!
With many Resurrection
blessings to all.

sign that Lpve has risen up
and is calling her by name,
but we, the readers, know
Love has risen up and is
going to be call ing her name
very soon!
T he d is c ip le s h e a r
about M a ry ’s discovery
o f that open, empty tomb
and run to see what has
happened. Perhaps they
understand the meaning o f
that empty tomb, perhaps
not. They see the evidence
o f the grave clothes and
they realize this is not just
a case o f a stolen body.
They don’t know how, yet
no g rav e ro b b er w ould
unwrap a dead body, take
the decom posing tissue,
muscle and bone, then leave
the grave clothes behind.
The text says Peter and
the Beloved Disciple both
see the evid en ce o f the
linen w rappings lying in
the tom b, and the cloth
that had been on J e su s ’
head was rolled up neatly
and lying in a place by
itself. The Beloved Disciple
sees th is e v id en ce, and
the story says he believes.
Believes w hat? For sure
he believes that Jesus was
gone from the grave. Most
Christians also read this part
o f the story and think the
Beloved Disciple believes
that som ehow Jesus has
conquered death too. Peter
and the Beloved Disciple
don’t yet understand how
the Love embodied as Jesus
C hrist has risen up, but
they know he has somehow
conquered death. But they
don’t yet hear Love calling
their names either.
Then as Mary weeps
outside the tomb, she bends
over to look inside it again
and sees tw o an g els in
white, where Jesus’ body
was last laid to rest, one
where his head had been
and one w h ere his feet
had rested. They ask her,
“ W om an, w hy are you
w eeping?” It is perhaps
a mark o f her deep grief
that she does not realize
s o m e th in g s p e c ia l has
happened as she answers
them , “ They have taken
away my Lord, and I do
not know where they have
laid him.” Then she turns
around and she sees Jesus
standing there, but she does
not recognize in her grief
who it is who is standing
there. Jesus asks her again.
“ W om an, w hy are you
weeping? Whom are you
looking for?” Supposing
him to be the gardener,
she says, “Sir if you have
carried him away tell me
where you have laid him,
and I will take him away.”
Focused on the physical and
emotional, she misses that
Love stands before her, in
her presence. Then Jesus
says, “ M ary!” It is only
then that she realizes who
is speaking with her. She
turns and says in surprise
and joy, “ Rabbouni!” It is
only that moment that she
recognizes that the one who
embodies God’s Love has
Pastor Elke L. Sharma
risen, is alive, and that he
Heppner United
has’ called her name!
In that moment Mary Methodist Church
must have understood how
