4-H club sews
pillowcases for
Guardian Care
The lone Sew Fantastic
4-H C lu b is s e w in g
pillowcases for the Guardian
Care Center, which works
with children from abusive
home situations in Morrow
and Umatilla counties.
At th e ir A p ril 13
meeting, club leader Nancy
Jepsen taught the members
how to sew a pillowcase
using a technique called the
“Roll-up/Burrito Method.”
The members said they
enjoyed making their first
pillowcase in a variety of
colorful fabrics.
They plan to make
more pillowcases, some of

combined Grand Prix race
and year-end awards.

each made a five-ounce
derby car to enter in the
race. The first place trophy
for the fastest car of the
night went to Joe Sherman
of Hepper; second place to
Carter Epperson of lone;
and third place to Hannah
Smith of Lexington.
Trophies were also
awarded to the best and
most creatively designed
cars. Taking first place was
Grace Smith of Heppner
with her black and white
“cow ” car. Second was

was Tacey Schonbachler of
Heppner.

travel to all the neighboring
counties and states without
the support o f so many
local sponsors who have
helped her reign. Sponsors,
she said, were listed on her
autograph sheets and on her
trailer panels to promote
their businesses.
“This is what it takes
to have a s u c c e s s fu l
asso ciatio n and award
y e ar-en d sc h o la rsh ip s
in academic and athletic
events for our seniors at
state and national levels,”
stated Sandford.
This year the state
finals will be held June
11 -15 at the Crook County
Fairgrounds in Prineville.
The queen event will
be held the first two days of
the finals and a new queen
and first attendant will be
crowned at the scholarship
auction dinner.
The young ladies will
compete in horsemanship,
speech, impromptu
questions in current events
and personality, a rodeo
association written test,
personal interview and
appearance.
“I have made so many
new friends here in Oregon
as well as across the U.S.
and they are life-long
friends,” she added.
“I wouldn't have been
able to do that without my
family, the association and
our sponsors.”
Scholarships, awards
and personal growth in

speaking and poise are
just a few things girls will
gain in becoming the new
Miss Oregon High School
Rodeo.
High school freshman,
sophom ore and j uni or
young ladies are encouraged
to apply.
