Mustang wrestlers second at
Halfway, take two golds

Heppner wrestled in
the 14-team Pine Eagle
tournament in Halfway
this past weekend. It was
the first time all season the
entire team was together in
a tournament. It paid off
as the Mustangs finished
second behind Crane and
ahead of the other ten teams
in 1A/2A Special District
4, plus Vale, Baker and
Melba, ID.
H eppner had five
w restlers in the finals
and came away with two
champions, Ryan Smith at
106 pounds and Treston
Maben at 152 pounds.
Smith’s gold medal was
won in the last 20 seconds
of the championship bout
as he scored three near-fall
points after trailing most of
the match 2-0.
Jared Lemmon, Jesse
Boyd and John Propheter
all placed second.
Cord Flynn and Kyle
Aldrich finished third,
while Jacob Moses won
three matches at 145 to
finish sixth.
The Mustangs will be in
Elgin next weekend for the
Special District 4 district
championships. The top
two finishers of each weight
class will qualify for the
OSAA state championship
tournament at Memorial
Coliseum in Portland the
following weekend.

The basketball season
for the Heppner girls’ team
came to an end this past
weekend with losses on
the road to the Enterprise
Outlaws and the Elgin
Huskies. The Mustangs lost
a close game to the Outlaws
48-44 and then were beaten
by the Huskies by a score
of 46-32.
In the gam e w ith
Enterprise, the Mustangs
led after one quarter 15-
14 and 25-18 at halftime.
The Mustangs continued
to lead the game at the
end of three quarters by
a score of 36-27. In the
fourth quarter the Outlaws
outscored the Mustangs
21-8 to get the win. For the
game the Mustangs made
one more field goal than
the Outlaws, but Enterprise
made six more free throws,
and that turned out to be the
difference in the game.
Kelly Wilson led the
team in scoring with 12.
She also had five rebounds
in the game. Micha Hintz
scored 11 points and had six
rebounds. Jessica Kempkin
had eight points and 10
rebounds for the night.
Blake Greenup and Maddie
Lindsay both had four
points and eight rebounds.
Paige Grieb finished with
three points, three rebounds,
and Rylee Kollman scored
two points and had three
rebounds.
At Elgin, the Mustangs
led the game after one
quarter by the score of 10-9.
The team could only score
four points in the second
quarter and were behind
at the h alf 19-14. The
Mustangs trailed after three
quarters by the score of 27-
22 and then were outscored
in the fourth quarter 19-10.
The Mustangs only shot 19
percent from the field in the
game and made less than
half of their free throws.
Leading the way for
the team was Wilson with
13 points and four steals.
Kempkin followed with
seven points and five
rebounds. Hintz had four
points and five rebounds in
the game. Greenup had four
points and three rebounds
on the night. Lindsay
scored three and had eight
rebounds, and Kollman
had one point and three
rebounds.
The Mustangs end their
season with a 10-13 overall
record. They were 6-10 in
conference play and tied for
sixth place.

Mustang boys secure slot in
BMC tournament
With a pair of wins this
past weekend, the Heppner
Mustang boys’ basketball
team has qualified for the
Blue Mountain Conference
district tournament. The
Mustangs, 14-9 overall
and 8-8 in conference play,
will take on the Weston-
McEwen TigerScots at 7:45
p.m. on Friday night at
Armand Larive Middle
School in Hermiston. If
they win, they will face
either Stanfield or Union
Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
The Heppner team
travelled to Enterprise
and beat the Outlaws by
a score of 50-26. It was
a strong defensive effort
by the team as they held
Enterprise to single-digit
scoring in each quarter. The
Mustangs led 15-7 after one
and 28-14 at halftime. The
team stretched the lead to
38-22 at the end of three,
and finished the game by
outscoring the Outlaws
12-4 in the fourth quarter.
Brian Rill and Logan
Grieb both scored 17 points
in the game. Rill also hauled
in eight rebounds and had
three assists. Grieb had
six rebounds in the game
and two assists. CJ Kindle
scored seven points and had
four assists. JC Putman also
had four points and pulled
down four rebounds. Jesse
Corbin and Andrew Hatfield
both scored two points in
the game. Jaden Orr ripped
down four rebounds and
had three assists for the
Mustangs. Caden Hedman
and Kevin Murray saw
their first varsity playing
time of the season and
both contributed right
away. Hedman scored one
point and Murray had two
rebounds. Ross Cutsforth
and Weston Putman both

After an overnight stay
in Enterprise, the team
then went to Elgin to play
the Huskies. Once again
the Mustangs started the
game fast and led after
one quarter 12-6. They
then stretched the lead to
23-9 at halftime with a
strong defensive effort.
Lighting up the scoreboard
with 20 points in the third
quarter gave the team a 43-
21 lead. The fourth quarter
saw Heppner outscore the
Huskies 14-5 to get the win
by the score of 57-26.
Logan Grieb had the
hot hand for the night as
he scored a season high
30 points in the game. He
also had five assists and
three rebounds. Cutsforth
had seven points and three

season with two wins over
the weekend.

“I was very pleased with
the way our team played
this weekend. We had to
have these two wins in
order to qualify for district,
and we did it. We talked
all week about it being
a business trip, and we
took care of business,” said
coach Jeremy Rosenbalm.

took a 13-8 lead after one
quarter and opened up a
30-17 lead at halftime.
A strong third quarter in
which Heppner outscored
the Outlaws 22-7 put the
game away for good.
The score at the end o f
three quarters was 52-24.
Enterprise did come back
some in the fourth quarter,
but it was too little, too late.

Putman, who poured in 16
points and played some
great defense in the game.

to coach this team. They
improve.d as the year
went on and had a great
season. The future certainly
looks bright for Heppner
basketball,” said coach Ken
Grieb.
