Mustang girls turn out ‘best-played
games of the season’
Split weekend games, but not by much
The H eppner g irls ’
basketball team put together
two o f their best-played
gam es o f the season so
far and came away with
a split of their conference
games this weekend. The
Mustangs beat the Stanfield
Tigers 36-15 and then took
the league-leading Pilot
Rock Rockets to the wire
before losing 37-33.
In th e gam e w ith
the Tigers, the Mustangs
struggled to score early
but still led 4-0 at the end
o f the first quarter and
13-7 at halftime. Heppner
outscored the Tigers 23-8
in the second half to secure
the win.
In maybe her best game
of the year, Kayla Kindle
scored a game high 10
points, had five rebounds
and two steals. Maddie
Lindsay followed with eight
points and eight rebounds.
Kelly Wilson scored seven
p o in ts and d ish ed out
three assists. Micha Hintz
had five points and three
rebounds for the game.
Blake Greenup scored four
points, had six rebounds
and two assists. Jessica
Kempkin scored two and
had seven big rebounds on
the night.
On Saturday night the
h ig h ly -ran k ed R ockets
cam e to tow n and the
Mustangs nearly pulled off
the upset. Heppner led 10-9
after the first quarter and the
game was tied at halftime
18-18.
After three quarters the
Rockets led by the score
o f 27-26. The H eppner
crowd was into the game
and the student cheering
section was very loud. The
game was close to the very
end, and the Mustangs had
opportunities, but it was not
to be on this night.
G reenup had a big
game with 13 points, four
rebounds and two assists.
Wilson followed with seven
points and eight rebounds.
Kindle had another good
game with six points, four
rebounds and two assists.
Lindsay scored five points
and had seven rebounds
on the night. Paige Grieb
had two points and two
rebounds. Hintz had four

The M ustangs won
their game on Saturday
night against the Pilot Rock
Rockets by a score of 78-
30. Heppner jumped out to
a 20-4 lead after one quarter
and led 41-9 at halftime.
The score was 61 -16 at the
end of three quarters as the
team coasted to the win.
Logan Grieb led the
team with 20 points and
four assists. Ross Cutsforth
had a strong game and
scored 14 points. Collins
came back from the ankle
injury to score 12 points
and haul in 11 rebounds. CJ
Kindle played an inspired
gam e and scored nine
points, had six rebounds,
four assists and two steals.
Rill also scored nine points
and had four rebounds for
the game. Jaden Orr had
five points, Corbin three
and Hatfield two.

Varsity basketball team
gained another split on the
w eekend in conference
play. Their overall record is
11-6 and 5-5 in BMC play.
H e p p n e r l o s t to
Stanfield by a score of 69-
39. The Tigers shot the
lights out of it early in the
game and jumped out to a
26-9 first-quarter lead.

Patrick Collins went down
in the second quarter with
an injured ankle and did not
return to the game.

held the Mustangs scoreless

fourth quarter but it was
too late for the Mustangs to
make up lost ground.

This week’s lunch meeting of the Heppner Chamber
of Commerce will be Thursday, Jan. 30, at noon in the St.
Patrick’s Senior Center dining room. The guest speaker
will be Rep. Greg Smith, who will introduce Director of
the Oregon Department of State Lands Mary Abrams.
Cost of lunch is $ 10; Howe’s About Pizza will cater.
Chamber lunch attendees are asked to RSVP at 541-

“Echo was short on
players for varsity, so we
only played a h alf o f a
game. Our defense was
tough, we only allowed
them to get a couple of
buckets in each quarter,”

Brian Spivey. “Our team
as a whole did a lot better
rebounding, pretty even
across the team as far as
rebounds go. Sophmore
Tre’ Neil led the team in
scoring with nine points.”

on Arlington in the first
quarter, held them scoreless
for most of the first quarter,
then they knocked down
three threes in a row to pull
within one at the end of the
quarter. We were tied at
the half,” said Spivey. “We
came out in the second half
and stepped up our defense,
held them to four points in
the half. Freshman Donald
M cElligott finished the
game with nine points and
10 rebounds, sophomore
Tre’ Neil had six points
and seven rebounds in one
quarter of play. Our defense
was the key to our win; we
had 16 steals in the game.
Joe Doherty came up with
five of those steals.”
Heppner JV ‘C’ team
enters season strong
The Heppner JV Boys
basketball team split their
games over the weekend to
take their record to 9-2 for
the season.
Heppner travelled to
Stanfield and lost to the
Tigers by a score of 39-20.
The Mustangs were looking
to avenge their only loss
on the season so far but did
not get the job done. The
Stanfield pressure defense
was too much for them to
handle and the Mustangs
had a poor shooting night.
Heppner trailed
throughout the game and
just couldn’t get anything
going. Weston Putman led
the team in scoring with
five. Jesse Corbin had four
points and Jake Lindsay
three. Kolby Currin, Kevin
Murray, Jeremiah Petzoldt
and Ross C utsforth all
scored two points in the
game.
The team was at home
on Saturday night to play
the Pilot Rock Rockets.
The Mustangs played much
better than the night before
and won the game 60-22.
Heppner scored early and
often off the Pilot Rock
press and kept it up when
the Rockets took the press
off. The Mustangs led 18-6
after one quarter and 34-8
at halftime; the lead then
increased to 46-16 after
three quarters o f play. A
balanced scoring attack
was led by Lindsay with
13. Jesse Corbin scored
12, Cutsforth and Caden
Hedman had eight each.
Currin, Murray, Putman
and Cade Arbogast each
scored four points, and
Kaden Corbin had three.
The JV2 or “C” team
won their first two games
o f the new year. They
beat the Weston-McEwen
Tigerscots by a score of 52-
35 and the Stanfield Tigers
73-43.
Against the Tigerscots,
Jeremiah Petzoldt led the
team in scoring with 14.
Ryan Cecil had nine and
Kaden Corbin scored seven.
Murray followed with six
and A rbogast had five.
C urrin and Jeff Dowdy
both scored four points
and Lindsay had three on
the night.

gam e. Lindsay had the
hot hand on the night and
scored 18 points to lead the
team. Hedman had 13 and
Arbogast scored 10. Currin
contributed eight points,
while Kaden Corbin and
Petzoldt added seven each.
Murray had five and Cecil
scored four. Dowdy had
two points for the game.
Community lunch menu
Amazing Grace Fellowship church members will
serve lunch on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at St. Patrick's Senior
Center. The meal will include clam chowder and oyster
crackers, coleslaw, and lemon bars. Milk is served at
