Mustangs defeat Dragons, advance to
state semifinals
The
Heppner
Mustangs have advanced
to the semifinal round of
the OSAA State Football
Championships. They did
so with a dominating 52-7
victory over the Monroe
D rag o n s on S atu rd ay
afternoon at Les Payne
Field. The Mustangs will
travel to Hillsboro Stadium
for a game next Saturday,
Nov. 23, to play the Regis
Rams. The Rams are the
first-place team out of the
Tri-River Conference and
have an 11-1 record.
H ep p n er to ta lly
dominated the Dragons on
the scoreboard and on the
stat sheet. The Mustangs
had 496 total yards for the
game, compared to 138 for
Monroe. Heppner had 26
first downs to four for the
Dragons. The Mustangs ran
69 plays in the game and the
Dragons only 29.
Heppner
also
dom inated the tim e o f
possession as they had the
ball for 35:08 and Monroe
12:52. The Mustangs had
12 drives for the game and
scored on eight of them.
H eppner scored on
their second possession
when quarterback Kaden
Clark passed the ball to
CJ Kindle for a 10-yard
touchdown. That made the
score 6-0.
When the M ustang
offense got the ball back
they scored again. This was
another nine-play drive that
ended when Clark threw a
14-yard touchdown pass to
Jordan Bailey. That made
the score 12-0 early in the
second quarter.
The only Monroe score
came on the first play of
their next possession. A
65-yard touchdown run and
extra point made the score
12-7.
The n ex t tim e the
Mustangs got the ball they
took six minutes off the
clock and ran 16 plays
before Brian Rill scored
from five yards out. Rill
also ran in the two-point
conversion to make the
score 20-7.
A fter the M ustang
defense forced a Dragon
p u n t, w h ich gave the
offense good field position,
they scored again. The
touchdow n cam e when
Rill ran the ball in from 13
yards out. Bailey scored the
two-point conversion on a
pass from Clark to make
the score 28-7 at halflime.
Monroe fumbled on
the kickoff to open the
second half and Kindle fell
on it to give the Mustangs
the ball. Two plays later,
Bailey scored on a run of
38 yards to make the score
34-7.
On the very next Dragon
play Bailey intercepted the
ball at midfield and ran it
to the 24-yard line. Seven
plays later the Mustangs
scored when Rill ran the
ball in from one yard out.
That made the score 40-7
in favor of the Mustangs.
The Heppner defense
stepped up again on the
next series as Logan Grieb
tipped a Monroe pass into
the air and Patrick Collins
intercepted it. H eppner
scored five plays later
when Rill threw a 49-yard
touchdown pass to Bailey.
That made the score 46-7
with over four minutes left
to play in the third quarter.
O n c e a g a i n the
powerful Heppner defense
forced a Monroe punt. The
Mustangs’ next drive was
highlighted by a 29-yard
run by Jesse Corbin and

Heppner then scored when
Clark threw to Kindle for a
10-yard touchdown. That
made the score 52-7 with
2:26 left in the third quarter.
The rest of the game was
then played with a running
clock as the Mustangs were
now ahead by 45 points.
The Dragons fumbled
the ball on their next play and
it was recovered by Bailey
at the 39-yard line. Grieb
took over at quarterback
and the Mustang coaches
moved many of the younger
players into the game. They
nearly scored again as they
moved the ball to the three-
yard line before turning it
over on downs.
The Dragons had one
more series but were forced
to punt after only four plays.
Then the Mustang offense
ran five more plays before
Grieb took a knee to end
the game. The final score
was 52-7.
C l a r k wa s 13- 17
passing the ball for 186
yards and three touchdowns.
Rill was 1-1 for 49 yards
and a touchdown. Bailey
caught four passes for 114
yards and Kindle three
for 55. Corbin had four
catches for 46 yards, Rill
two for 17 and Jaden On-
one for six yards. Rill led
the team in rushing with
104 yards on 26 carries.
Bailey was next with 69
yards, Corbin 46, Weston
Putman 24 and Tommy
Bredfield 16. Kindle ran for
five yards, Kevin Murray
four, and Clark and Grieb
had three each.

Propheter also recorded a
tackle.
