On Sunday morning
the paleontologists began
w orking around 7 a.m.
Through the course of the
day the tusk was uncovered
bit by bit. Early that morning
two teeth were found, one
from a prehistoric horse,
the other from some sort
of carnivore. These teeth
were found within a foot
of the area the tusk was in.
This was a good sign to the
paleontologists, because it
meant that there could be
multiple species around the
dig site.
grow longer, around 1
p.m., another bone was
found right next to the
mammoth tusk. Professor
Davis thought the bone
may be from the leg o f
a prehistoric camel that
had been caught during a
flash flood. With this news,
the students immediately
started to create a cast for
the camel bone in order to
take it back to Eugene with
them.
As the dig continued,
no one was sure if the
mammoth tusk continued

trenches being dug, the
students soon discovered
that the tusk didn’t go into
the hillside any further,
but maybe downward into
the ground. They then
quickly realized that this
was a fragment, not the
w hole tusk. With dusk
approaching, a cast was
put on the rest of the tusk
to keep it from falling apart
while being moved.
At 5:30 p.m. Oct. 6.
the tusk was successfully
removed and carried out
of the ravine to the hilltop.
With the plaster cast, and a
pile of dirt on the tusk, the
final weight was between
150-200 pounds.
At 7 p.m. the lone
mammoth tusk left town
and headed to Eugene to
go back to the University
of Oregon for cleaning and
temporary display in their
new museum.

It was senior night
for the H eppner High
School volleyball team last
Thursday, and they went
out in style by beating the
Stanfield Tigers 3-1.
Playing their last home
match for the Mustangs
were seniors Kyla Dyer,
Ryan Dougherty. Nicole
Kempken, Micha Hintz and
Kayla Kindle.
The team started off
slow after the ceremony
that was held before the
start o f the match. Poor
serving led them to lose the
first set 11-25. They then
pulled it all together to win
the next three sets and the
match by scores of 25-6,
25-20, 25-15.
They then travelled to
Elgin on Saturday to face
the Huskies and the Grant
Union Prospectors. It is
always a tough and exciting
match when playing the
Prospectors, and this time
was no exception. The
Mustangs won by scores of
25-20,25-23, 12-25,25-21. Senior IMicha Hint/ places the
