In a contest that many
are calling the game of the
year, or the game of the
decade, or maybe even the
game of the century for
Heppner, the M ustangs
defeated the Grant Union
Prospectors 20-14 in two
overtimes.
Both teams had not
been beaten on the year,
and this game was for first
place in the conference.
With the win the Mustangs
are 7-0 for the season and
are currently ranked third
in the state.
It was a hard-fought
defensive battle throughout
the first quarter, in which
neither team scored. The
first score of the game came
when Grant Union scored
with a little more than two
minutes left in the first half.
That made the halftime
score 6-0.
It w asn’t until three
plays into the fourth quarter
that the Mustangs scored.
Quarterback Kaden Clark
passed to CJ Kindle for
an 11-yard touchdown.
That tied the score at
6-6. Neither team could
reach the end zone for the
rest o f the quarter. The
Prospectors almost won
the game when, on the last

the ages was 20-14 in favor
of the Mustangs.
Although the Mustangs
were outgained for the game
447-283 by the Prospectors,
Heppner did not turn the ball
over. The Mustang defense
forced four Grant Union
fumbles and recovered
three of them. Bailey also
intercepted a Prospector
pass.
For the game Clark
was 15-27 passing for 159
yards. Jesse Corbin caught
two for 52 yards, Orr three
for 33. Kindle and Bailey
each caught three for 32 and
19 yards respectfully. Grieb
caught the one for 20.
Rill led the team in
rushing with 73 hard-fought
yards. Clark was next with
23. Kindle had nine and
Bailey seven.
On the defensive side
of the ball Orr had or was
involved in 18 tackles.
Tommy Bredfield was
next with 15 and Weston
Putman and Patrick Collins
had 14 each. JC Putman
was in on 13 stops and
Bailey and Grieb recorded
nine each. Kindle and Rill
followed with eight and
Ethan Ashbeck was next
with seven. It was a great
defensive effort to hold
the Prospectors, who were
averaging 48 points per
game previously, to only 14
on that night.
The next game for the
Mustangs is this Friday,
Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Pilot
Rock.
