Cardinal hopes continue to be dashed
The Cardinal football
team continued what seems
to be a jinxed season with
two consecutive losses to
Sherman and Dufur.
T he firs t c o n te s t,
against Sherman on Oct. 4,
handed lone a 68-46 loss.
"This week our offense
played well but we were
unable to co n tain the
offense of Sherman," said
lone Coach Stan Weiper.
“ Dalton Hughes played
well at quarterback, running
the offense and completing
some critical passes. Jailin
Conboy and Gus Petersen
ran e ffe c tiv e ly to the
outside with the assistance
o f some solid blocking
on the perim eter from
Joel Stillman and Baily
Haguewood. We will be
working hard to improve
for next week’s game with
Dufur.
Unfortunately, those
h opes w e re n ’t carried
through during the Oct. 11
contest against Dufur; the
Cardinal lost 64-20 to the
Rangers.
"Dufur is one of the top
teams in the state and we
battled them pretty tough
despite the final score. The
score was tied 14 to 14 late
in the first quarter and the
team made improvements
in a number of areas. Joel
Stillman had a strong game
on defense at safety and
B aily H aguew ood had
an o th er great gam e on
offense with four catches
for 160 yards and two TDs,”
Weiper said.
The losses make lone’s
season record 0-6 overall
and 0-3 league; the team is
currently ranked #29 in 1A
standings.

S tu d e n ts from the
advanced Spanish and

journey on Saturday, Sept.

The first stop was

Mount St. Helens. Students
were guided by science
teacher Dale Holland, who
shared his own memory
and thoughts on the 1980
eruption o f St. Helens.
Students hiked at the park
and had a great view o f the
volcano. The students then
traveled down the mountain
to the C oldw ater Creek
Science and Education
Center. There they learned
about the changes to the
e n v iro n m e n t th a t th e
eruption had caused to the
areas surrounding Mount

Portland for a bilingual
play about the childhood of
the famous Mexican artist
Diego Rivera.
After the play students
were treated to dinner
and singing at La Bonita
R estaurant in Portland.
The Spanish students in
Karen Holland's class had
studied Diego Rivera’s art
beforehand.
On the way home the
next day the students made
several stops at trails and
waterfalls in the Columbia
River Gorge, and discussed
and observed how lava
flows had molded the area
into the landscape that it is
today, along with the help
o f the M issoula Floods
many thousands o f years
ago.
The students say they
will never forget the fun
they had and the adorable
chipmunk Señora Holland
made them leave behind,
accurately named Gordito.
