Heppner muzzles Bulldogs 43-0 in last
preseason game
The H eppner High
School Mustang football
team made the long road
trip to Willamina for their
last preseason game against
the 3A B u lld o g s. The
team dominated the game
throughout and came away
with a 43-0 win.
The Mustangs kicked
off to start the game and,
on the third play for the
Bulldogs, Weston Putman
intercepted a pass and ran
it back 40* yards to the
five-yard line. A Brian Rill
touchdown run and Jesse
Corbin PAT kick made
the score 7-0. The strong
Mustang defense held and
the Bulldogs punted. Rill
took the punt 40 yards to
give the Mustangs good
field position at the 25-
yard line. He then ran for
23 yards to give the team a
first and goal from the two.
Putnam ran it in from there
to give the team a 13-0 lead.
The Heppner defensive
line led by Patrick Collins,
JC Putnam. John Propheter
and Ethan Ashbeck held the
Bulldogs down all night
long. They forced another
three and out, and the
Mustangs got the ball again.
A nice 22-yard touchdown
pass from q u arterb ack
Kaden Clark to Rill made
the score 19-0. T h e PAT
run by Weston Putman then
made it 21-0. On the very
next Bulldog possession.
Rill intercepted a pass. Five
plays later, Clark passed to
Corbin 25 yards for another
Mustang touchdown. The
Corbin kick made the score
28-0 at the end of the first
quarter.
The Mustang defense
had stro n g play from
l i n e b a c k e r s T r e s to n
Maben, Jaden Orr, Tommy
Bredfield, Saul Erickson
and Weston Putman. They
helped hold the Bulldogs to
a total of 21 yards of offense
for the game. The second
q u arte r featu red som e
drives by both teams and
an interception by Corbin.
The Mustang offensive
line again took control of
the line of scrimmage; a
long drive of only running
plays ended with a Rill
touchdown from 23 yards
out. The Corbin PAT made
the score 35-0.
In the fourth quarter
the younger Mustangs got
into the game and played
well. On their first drive
the blocking was good
and Kevin M urray had
several big runs. The team
scored on a four-yard run
by Kolby Currin. The PAT
pass from Logan Grieb
to Caden Hedman made
the score 43-0. The young
defense had a “bend but
don't break” attitude and
held the Bulldogs out of the
end zone. They controlled
the rest of the game w ith
some strong running plays
and ran the clock out to give
the Mustangs the 43-0 win.
Rill led the team in
rushing with 166 yards.
Jordan Bailey led several
others with big contributions
in the ground game. Clark
was 7-14 in passing for 142
yards and two touchdowns.
Rill caught the ball for 84
yards and Corbin had 58
yards receiving.
This week the Mustangs
conclude H om ecom ing
week with a home game
versus the lrrigon Knights
at Les Payne field.

FFA raising funds to
attend convention
This October, the Heppner FFA Chapter is attending
the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY.
Though the members are excited at this opportunity,
says FFA advisor Beth Dickenson, they have had come
up with many ideas to raise money for this trip, such as
the basket auction during the wine tasting at the fair this
summer; other upcoming fundraisers are planned to help
fill in the gaps in funding.
The FFA Chapter will be having a bake sale at
Heppner Family Foods on Main Street in Heppner from
4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, and again on Friday the
27th from 8 a m. - 12* p.m.
The Chili Run is a 5k run/walk being held Oct. 19.
Registration begins at 5 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church parish hall in Heppner. The run/walk starts at
5:30 p.m. and chili, combread and hot chocolate will be
served from 5-7 p.m.
Pre-registration forms are available at many local
merchants in Heppner. For registration questions, contact
Patrick Collins at 541-626-1913.
