Forest Road 5506 closes
weekdays for maintenance
An eight mile stretch
of forest road 5506 is now
closed, Monday through
Friday, from its intersec
tion with forest road 55 at
Texas Bar to Oriental Creek
Campground. The week
day closure allows contrac
tors to complete necessary
cut-slope stabilization and
drainage improvements on
this popular forest road that
follows alongside the North
Fork John Day River.
“Construction is ex
pected to take about a
month, said Brett Thomas,
acting District Ranger on
the North Fork John Day
Ranger District. The road
will open to weekend travel
Friday evenings through
late Sunday evenings. “If
roadwork isn’t completed
by Memorial Day week
end, the road will open at
noon on Friday, May 24,
and remain open through
Monday, May 27 to accom
modate holiday travel,” said
Thomas.
Oriental Creek Camp
ground is still accessible
by forest roads 5507 and
5507130, though travel
by passenger car or pull
ing trailers is not recom
mended.
