Fab Four 4-H cooks Wee Bit O ’ Ireland
up some warmth
is on its way
Renee Peterson, Morgan Orem, leader Nancy Jepson and
Aaron Smythe discuss the new 4-H baking manuals. The 4-H
baking and cooking curriculum was completely redone this
year. -Contributedphoto
On Jan. 24, the mem
bers of the Fab Four Foods
Group met at lone Com
munity Church to make
breadsticks and share soup.
The group made Almost
Famous Breadsticks and EZ
Cheesy Breadsticks. Mrs.
Jepson also made bread
sticks from the recipe in
the new 4-H manual. In the
taste test, the clear winner
was the EZ Cheesies.
While the breadsticks
were rising, the group dis
cussed My Plate activities
from the new 4-H books
and took a quiz on kitchen
terms.
The group then shared
soup they had brought.
M organ Orem brought
taco soup, which everyone
agreed was a great winter-
day soup.
Aaron Smythe brought
potato soup which was
very thick and creamy. The
group liked it and said it
was like eating mashed po
tatoes w ith bacon bits.
Renee Peterson shared
homemade turkey soup,
which was quickly renamed,
due to the directions, Tur
key Carcass Soup. (You
can’t get that great flavor
any other way.) It was well
received, and the lone male
in the group had seconds,
thirds and then took home
the leftovers.
Mrs. Jepson made a
lentil, split pea and smoked
ham soup that the adults
enjoyed.
The soup recipes all
came from the kids’ grand
mothers: Bonnie Ball, Anita
Orem, Eunice McElligott,
and the late Jo Huston.
Sam ples w ere also
dished up and taken to
their missing club member
Syd Stefani.

Road bowling
returns to St. Pat’s
Heppner’s Irish Road
Bowling event will draw
the St Patrick’s Day week
end celebration to a close
on Sunday, March 17. Par
ticipants in this event will
gather on Sunday afternoon
before the 1:37 p.m. activity
commences. Participants
must be 18 years or older.
This Irish sport that
dates back to the 1600s was
played in America by the
Irish troops in West Virginia
during the Civil War. In
recent years, a resurgence
of interest in the sport has
developed in both Ireland
and the United States. Hep
pner’s event has gained
popularity since it was first
offered in 2006, and entries
are limited (maximum of
20 teams), so interested
persons should pick up en
try forms at the chamber of
commerce office and return
them, filled out (with pay
ment), soon.
Teams of two to four
members compete over a
course o f approximately
one mile by tossing the
iro n -an d -steel “ b o w ls”
that weigh 28 ounces and
are slightly smaller in di
ameter than a tennis ball.
The team that completes
the course with the fewest
tosses wins.
Each participant must
pay $5 to play. The purse
is then divided, with half
going into the St. Patrick’s
Weekend fund and h alf
being divided among the
top three teams. Names of
the winning team’s mem
bers will be added to the
trophy that is on display in
the window o f Peterson’s
Jewelers.
The starting point o f
the course will be on Balm
Fork Road. Spectators are
welcome at the event but
are cautioned to remain a
safe distance from the ac
tion because the bowls are
heavy and have been known
to break bones in unfortu
nate situations.
Interested participants
should remember to sign
up early to guarantee a spot
in the event. The forms can
be picked up at the Heppner
Chamber office, or call 541 -
676-5536 to have a form
mailed.
