Mustang basketball celebrates
senior night
Cardinal boys on
take two wins
Girls set sights on post season
In Heppner hoops this
week, the Mustangs played
three league contests, start
ing on Tuesday when Hep
pner hosted the Irrigon
Knights. The Knights (12-0
BMC) are considered the
favorites to win the title
at the OSAA state tourna
ment.
The boys lost the game
65-38 but played good bas
ketball against a very good
team. The Mustangs came
within four points in the
second quarter and ended
the half behind 24-34. The
Knights wasted no time in
the second half, pushing the
ball and the score for the
win. JC Putman led Hep
pner with 12 points.
The Lady M ustangs
beat the Knights 44-25. The
contest started slow with a
first-quarter score o f 4-4.
The Mustangs woke up,
though, and played good
basketball, winning the re
bounds and executing their
offense well. Baily Bennett
led in scoring for Heppner
with 21 points. Alana Wil
son added 10 points and
nine assists. Maddie Lind
say posted 10 rebounds.
Friday night was se
nior night in Heppner. Five
seniors on the boys’ team
were honored for their dedi
cation. Stephen Thomp
son, Aiden Wright, Bryce
Fowler, Kyle Harrison and
Garrett Robinson have all
competed together since
Colt basketball.

The boys lost the con
test 55-39 but fought hard
on the court. No game stats
were available at press
time.
The Lady Mustangs
won co n v incingly, 48-
29, over the Grant Union
Prospectors. The Mustangs
(11-3 BMC) played a solid
game on both ends of the
court, holding Grant Union
to 9 points at the half while
consistently scoring on the
offense.
Five seniors were also
honored for the girls’ team.
Baily Bennett, Alana Wil
son, M akenzie C orrea,
Maggie Collins and Emma
Osmin all stuck together
throughout their time here
in Heppner.
When one thinks of all
the hours these 10 seniors
have logged, they are seen
to truly be competitors.
It was a bye week on
Saturday for the Mustangs
as they prepare for the final
week of BMC league play
with a road trip to Enter
prise and Elgin to finish
the season. The boys will
be playing for pride but
the girls will have a huge
game against Enterprise.
The Outlaw girls have held
the number one spot in the
BMC all year, with Hep
pner back one game in the
number two spot. The race
is tight for the Lady Mus
tangs, with Pilot Rock and
Union right behind them.
The Mustang girls will
be in the post-season this
year, though in what spot
is yet to be determined.
They have held a ranking of
three or better in the OSAA
throughout but. w ith the top
four BMC league teams
ranked in the top 10 in the
state, competition is fierce.
From here, the road to the
state tournament is full of
twists and turns, not to men
tion bumps and potholes.
