Tax Aide program seeks volunteers
Heppner, OR—The Tax
Aide Program, sponsored
by AARP in conjunction
with CAPECO, is seeking
volunteers for its Morrow
County program.
Historically, volunteer
tax preparation has been
done in both Heppner and
Boardm an on a weekly
basis beginning in February
and running through April
15. This year, however,
there could possibly be no
tax program due to a lack of
volunteers.
“I can ’t do it alone
folks.” says Leann Rea, a
tax aide volunteer for the
past 20 years.
“This is a much-needed
service for our community,
and I would hate to see us
not be able to open the Hep
pner or Boardman sites.”
Volunteers are needed
to perform general clerical
duties, prepare taxes us
ing computer software and

“We don’t just turn you
loose and expect you to
prepare someone’s return
without training and guid
ance,” states Scot Jacobson,
CAPECO’s volunteer man
ager, and district coordina
tor for the tax program.
“Taxes aren’t as scary
to prepare as people think.
We provide the training you
will need and there are a lot
o f taxes we can’t prepare
because they are just too
complex.”
The AARP tax program
is designed to prepare basic
returns that are not compli
cated. It is designed primar
ily to serve those age 60 and
older, although anyone may
seek their assistance. There
is no charge by the Tax Aide
Program to have your taxes
done.
Currently the volunteer
program is seeking a mini
mum o f three individuals
in order to be able to offer
this service in Heppner and
Boardman: one volunteer to
act as a greeter to the pro
gram; one volunteer to pre
pare taxes; and one volun
teer who would be willing
to do both. More volunteers
would be a welcome addi
tion to the program.
