BOMB SCARE

gon high school. How
ever, he said police training
covers such events.
“They train us on cer
tain details on how to react
and protocols and clearing
the building, searching,”
said Wilson, who added that
the event wasn’t a shock,
even in a small town like
Heppner. “I don’t believe
it’s a surprise; it can happen
anywhere, and there’s no
reason we shouldn’t all be
prepared for something like
this to happen. We don’t
treat them as routine; we
treat them as serious every
time.”
Wilson said he was one
of two police responders,
the other being a Boardman
officer who happened to be
at Les Schwab getting his
car worked on, heard what
was happening and showed
up to help. Other respond
ers were Heppner volunteer
fireman Ryan Jundt—also a
MCSO deputy—and Assis
tant Fire Chief Steve Rhea.
It was those four who went
into the building to deter
mine whether the promised
bombs actually existed.
“The caller had stated
a 25-minute time on deto
nation, so we waited until
well after the time limit
as a precaution before we
went in and cleared,” said
Wilson.
The so-called “bomb
promise” turned out to be
a hoax after all, one of 18
across Oregon Monday af
ternoon. According to Ore
gon State Police, 28 county
courthouses and the Oregon
Public Service Building in
Salem received phoned-in
bomb threats Monday af
ternoon, Nov. 19.
“These threats appear
to be similar to multiple
reports received Nov. 15
in Washington State (ap
proximately eight reports)
and Nov. 2 (approximately
nine reports) in Nebraska,
which were all unfounded,”
said an OSP statement. The
OSP reported that the state
wide threats began around
2:30 p.m. and continued for
about an hour.
Other locations with
courthouse bomb threats
included Baker, Benton,
Clatsop, Crook, Curry, De
schutes, Gilliam, Grant,
Jackson, Jefferson, Kla
math, Lake, Lane, Lin
coln, M alheur, M arion,
Multnomah, Polk, Sher
man, Tillamook, Umatilla,
Union, Wallowa, Wasco,
Washington, Wheeler and
Yamhill counties.
Twenty-two of the lo
cations evacuated personnel
while responding law en
forcement conducted area
checks, while others chose
not to evacuate but also
conducted checks. None of
the locations reported find
ing any suspicious objects.
Morrow County per
sonnel were allowed back
in their offices around 3:51,
a little more than an hour
after the initial scare. For
them, life goes on, though
with an unpleasant memory
of a Monday in Novem
ber.
“Now we're back here
today, just doing our job,”
said Wolff.

pie with whole-wheat Smart
Balance crust that was made
by Claudia Smythe.
The Fab Four Foods
Group used to be the lone

terson decided they wanted
a “fun” name this year.
