I had the opportunity this past summer to witness
some of the best Heppner has to offer, not only for our
town but also the county.
We had the good fortune to have Maggie Collins
represent our court as the Morrow County Fair and Rodeo
Queen, and she did an excellent job. She jumped right in
from the beginning and didn’t stop until the very end.
She attended numerous functions all over the county
and the state that weren’t necessarily required of her, and
did it with grace and a smile. She is a very personable and
confident young lady.
During fair week, Maggie participated with many
entries, and you would see her all dressed up doing her
“queenly” duties one minute, and the next she would be
mucking out her animal pen, (you don’t often see a queen
do this). She was very confident in her abilities whether
it be the fashion revue, judging or herdsmanship.
She had the adoration o f many young people who
thought she was “very cool.” She would take time out of
her busy schedule to ask them how they were “faring” at
the fair, and be genuinely interested.
In the High School news in the Gazette-Times, when
asked, she answered that she wanted to attend Montana
State University and study to become a veterinarian and
travel the world. And you know what? I believe she
will.
I know that a lot of work goes into representing the
county, not only from Maggie, but all of her support staff
(mom, dad, family and friends). Their jobs included taking
care of and transporting her horse, making sure she got
where she needed to be on time, and raising money for
her travel and other incidentals (in addition to what she
received from the county).
Maggie always has a smile on her face (and a hello to
some young boys 1 know at the Round-Up parade, which
made their day).
During the PRC A Rodeo, a young lady who had
sung the National Anthem a hundred times, and always
does a great job, couldn’t quite get through the song, and
Maggie very graciously stepped in and finished it. (Yes,
she can sing, too.)
If I had a vote, I would vote for another year for Mag
