Shirley Rugg invited
me and some other friends
on her annual camping trip.
This year the trip was to the
Steens Mountains in south
ern Oregon. Accompanying
her this year were Sibbea
Browning from Heppner,
Tom and Cheryl Berry from
Prairie City, OR and my
self, Kathy Tellechea from
Lexington.
We loaded horses and
were on the road by 8 a m.
Wednesday. August 1. We
met up with the Berrys in
John Day and then contin
ued on to the Steens, arriv
ing in mid-afternoon. We
saw the South Steens Hol
lywood herd of wild horses
around a waterhole. Shirley
stopped, and Sibbea and 1
hiked out to photograph the
herd. It was hot, the grass is
sparse and the water is dry
ing up. So far the herd is in
pretty good shape, but rain
is needed.
We continued on to the
South Steens campground.
Set up camp and settled in
for the night after a dinner
of chicken and potato salad.
The next day, we rode the
Little Blitzen Trail. The
country is breathtaking.
Hamburgers were grilled
for dinner. We all pitched
in and helped w ith prepara
tions and cleanup.
The following day we
rode the Little Indian Can
yon. This area is where my
late husband John Tellechea
came on a contract to herd
sheep in 1964. In 1970,
Shirley went to French Glen
to purchase a band of sheep
and John came with her to
be sheep foreman for her.

S eeing the kind o f
country where John first
herded gave everyone a
new respect for all the
Basque herders who came
to that area to carve out a
new life for themselves. It
is rugged and unforgiving...

loneliness.
Arriving back at camp,
after dinner o f chicken
wraps, the Berrys loaded
up and returned home. We
went back to spend time
with the wild horses and
took many photographs.
That herd of wild horses has
stolen my heart.
S atu rd ay found us
breaking camp and head
ing to the top of the Steens.

and goodbye. I have been
there numerous times since
he passed and, each time, a
lone golden eagle stands by
watching.
We continued on to
French Glen, where we
had lunch and did a little
shopping in the General
Store. We stopped in Bums
to visit Agustin and Juanita
Andueza. He also herded
for Shirley some 40 years
ago.
We arrived home filled
with great m em ories. A
trip none o f us will ever
forget....
