HES celebrates year end
The last few days of the
school year were celebrated
at H eppner Elem entary
School with many fun ac
tivities.
On Tuesday evening,
the gym was filled with stu
dents, parents and staff for
the end-of-the-year awards
night. More than 325 cer
tificates were given to K-6
students for AR, HEROES
Junior Readers, math con
tests and the Presidential
Awards, to name a few.
The school loaded up
the buses and headed to
Cutsforth Park on Wednes
day to enjoy a barbecue with
all the trimmings prepared
by Mrs. Rill, Mrs. Carlson
and their many helpers. The
students who passed all four
AR goals were treated to a
few hours playing horse
shoes, relays, baseball and
relaxing in the sun instead
of school work.
On T hursday, M rs.
Gentry organized the an
nual field day in the gym
with 12 different stations
including the water relay,
three-legged race, balloon
popping and tug-o-war.
The students and staff were
exhausted, but fun was had
by all.
Heppner Elementary
wrapped the year up with
its Student of the Month
assembly, the character trait
for which was confidence.
They also awarded heir
fourth-quarter perfect at
tendance, Les Schwab Pride
in Performance second-se
mester perfect attendance,
and all-year perfect atten
dance students.
The final event was the
honoring of staff who will
not be at HES next year. Mr.
VanLiew, who retired earlier

honored with a keychain.
Mrs. Norton, who was the
school’s temporary Title
1 teacher, and Mrs. Stone,
who is moving to Hidden
Valley with her family, were
honored with wind chimes.
A standing ovation was
given to two retiring teach
ers, Mrs. Clough and Mrs.
Haguewood. They were
honored with necklaces,
yard benches, and wooden
teacher chairs. Each has a
special inscription: “Thank
You for Making a Differ
ence in the Lives of Stu
dents,” “ What a Teacher
Writes on the Blackboard of
Life Can Never Be Erased"
and “Retirement...now sit
and relax.”
Mr. Combe commented
about their retirement at the
close of the day, “There goes
61 years of teaching experi
ence out the door. That can
never be replaced."
