A View from the Hill
By Doris Brosnan
R esidents o f W illow
Creek Terrace might view
their luck with the weather
as occasionally not the best:
Last m onth during their
observation o f “National
Backyard Games Week,”
rain and wind forced their
games inside. On Monday
o f this week, they had to
observe “International Pic
nic Day” inside because of
the one day o f rain in over
two weeks. Luck o f the ...
Terracites?
They have continued,
how ever, to rem ain for
tunate with most o f their
plans, starting with their
efforts on “Say Something
Nice Day” on June 1. O f
course, nice people usually
do find saying something
positive an easy assig n
ment, so “nice” was preva
lent on the Hill. Two days
later, on “Cancer Survivors
Day,” residents and staff
held a m ean in g fu l c o n
versation about how their
lives have been touched
by cancer, which led to a
further conversation about
dying, not always an easy
topic to discuss. The morn
ing visit on D Day evoked
memories o f that day and
o f Jim Norene's trip a few
years ago to the European
observance o f that impor
tant event in World War 11.
June 8 brought a tasty twist
to “Jelly-Filled Doughnut
Day” as the residents cel
ebrated with straw berry-
rh u b arb cin n am o n rolls
from Willow Creek Diner.
The halls w ere an echo
o f parade noise on June
9, when residents sim ul
tan e o u sly but in d iv id u
ally in their rooms watched
the Rose Parade telecast.
R eaders w ho rem em ber
now -rare soda fountains
w ould have ap p reciated
the discussion on June 10’s
"B lack Cow Day.” R esi
dents reminisced about the
black cow— root beer floats
created by the now -rare
"soda jerks” behind those
soda fountains. F a th ers'
Day featured barbecued
ribs and an ice cream cake,
and fam ily visitors. The
remainder o f June will of
fer more thought-provoking
topics, activities and tasty
celebrations.
The s u m m e r - l i k e
w eather held last Friday
evening for the visitin g
G oldw ing m otorcyclists,
who added a ride around
the Terrace circular drive
to their M ain Street p a
rade. This visit stimulated
some conversation among
residents in anticipation of
their ride-by, especially for
Dean and M ary Eleanor
Gilman, who remembered
days o f riding together on
Dean's bike.
To celebrate summer,
“ Music in the Park” pro
gram s in Boardm an and
lrrigon began this week.
Several residents plan to
attend a num ber o f these
M onday-evening events.
Summer weather is produc
ing healthy-looking pro
duce and weeds in the Ter
race garden, so volunteer
help is welcomed. Anyone
who does come to thin some
produce or dispatch some
weeds cannot show fear,
however, when they con
front the garden scarecrow.
One only needs to greet
“ D allas” with a friendly
“Hello” before going about
his or her work.
Recently, Peggy Davis
received a big "Hello” from
residents and sta ff when
she moved into a Terrace
apartment. Peggy moved to
Heppner from Walla Walla
to live closer to daughter
Sharon Biddle. Peggy has
moved into her new home
soon enough for settling in
before her birthday celebra
tion. On June 28, she will be
95 years old.
Soon after that, the staff
will have the uncommon
privilege o f preparing for
an open house to honor a
resident centenarian. On
July 12, A lice B uckley,
who has lived on the Hill
for about three years, will
celebrate her 100lh birthday.
Her friends, fam ily and
neighbors certainly view
this com ing, m om entous
occasion with great antici
pation.
