yard has been reformed into
a garden bed shared with
lots of container plantings.
A crop of strawberries is
growing well, although the
local herd of deer likes to
visit and help themselves.
Nearby is a propane-
heated greenhouse they
put in, although windstorm
damage last January stopped
the supply of fresh toma
toes from it. Raised beds
are used for vegetables,
and Paul’s favorite part of
gardening is “eating the
produce.” Jan uses herbs
she grows, such as oregano
and lemon thyme, in her
cooking.
In the side yard, a
clothes line was built. Ex
isting beds have had soil
amendments worked in and
have been enhanced with
more plantings, including
a ‘Miss Kim’ lilac, ponten-
tilla, variegated iris, ‘Moon-
glow’juniper, Japanese iris
and Snow-in-Summer.
Since moving into the
pleasant ranch home, new
gutters and windows have
been added and the exterior
painted. To camouflage an
unused driveway apron,
Paul and Jan landscaped
with rock and decorative
planters. Patriotically estab
lished in the front yard is a
sturdy flagpole flying our
American flag. The colors
are lit at night by a spotlight
put in by Paul.
Jan enjoys “digging in
the dirt” and “likes to see
things grow.” While grow
ing up, her family moved
frequently for work, so she
especially appreciates a
“home of her own.” Paul
states he grew up with a
“lack of interest” in garden
ing, because punishment to
him as a kid was weeding
his family’s garden. But,
he has always taken time to
appreciate a nice yard and
“notice the tulips.”
Paul currently drives
school bus in Morrow
County and Jan works as
the church secretary for
Hope Lutheran and All St.
Episcopal churches. During
evenings, the Denlingers
take time to enjoy views
of town and sunsets from
their covered deck. This
December, they will cel
ebrate 40 years of marriage.
Here’s wishing them many
more years of gardening
together.
Yard of the Month is
sponsored by the Heppner
Garden Club, the City of
Heppner and MCGG Green
Feed.
The Heppner Math De
partment recently hosted a
high school math contest,
with both team and individ
ual competitions. Heppner,
Irrigon, Riverside, Echo,
Weston-McEwen, Sherman
and Pilot Rock sent teams
to participate in five math
classifications.
In the Algebra 1 clas
sification, Lizzi Cox from
Echo placed first, Jasmine
Aguilar from Irrigon placed
second and Tommy Bred-
field placed third. The Hep
pner team of Kai Arbogast,
Tommy Bredfield, Lexi
Bray and Emily Pappas
placed first.
In the Geometry clas
sification, Joe Schmidt from
Heppner placed first, Shy-
lee Stroud from Weston-
McEwen placed second
and Jordan Washos from
Riverside placed third. The
Heppner Geometry team
placed third, and consisted
of Skylar Hawks, Harley
Bishop, Joe Schmidt and
Jeremiah Petzhold.
Frst place in the Alge
bra 2 individual competi
tion was Jason Weng from
Irrigon. In second place
was Nick Coleman from
Sherman; also from Sher
man was third-place winner
Andie Harrison.
Allen Liu from Hep
pner placed first in the Pre-
Calculus division. Alex
G ilsdorf from Weston-
McEwen placed second,
and Caitlin Nelson from
Riverside placed third. The
Heppner team o f Micha
Hintz, Kelly Nelson, Cam
Day and Allen Liu placed
first.
Bryce Fowler from
Heppner placed first in the
Calculus individual compe
tition. Krista Perisho from
Sherman placed second,
and Mic Dabuskis from
Sherman placed third. The
Heppner Calculus team,
consisting of Bryce Fowler,
Stephanie Schular, Conner
Pappas and Zech Hintz,
place first overall.
Also participating were
Tessa Gould, Mallorie Jones
and Lilly Sandford.
Paul and Jan Denlinger (inset) are the recipients of May’s Yard
of the Month recognition. They won the award after adapting
to gardening life in Eastern Oregon, a contrast to their former,
more fertile environments. -Contributedphotos

Recipients of the Hep
pner Garden Club’s Yard
of the Month recognition
for May are Paul and Jan
Denlinger.
Paul is originally from
Iowa, with its rich soil and
good rainfall. Many of Jan’s
family have settled in an
agricultural area of upstate
New York. Together with
their son and daughter,
they lived in the fertile Wil
lamette Valley. After Paul’s
retirement as postmaster at
Amity, they moved to Hep
pner in June, 2008 to be
closer to their son in Baker
City, and their daughter and
five grandchildren in Spray.
Jan said they brought along
“a truckload of plants” that
had done well for them in
Western Oregon to their
new home at 565 S. Chase.
They soon realized that
gardening was going to be
different on a rocky hillside
with shallow, alkaline soil
and an arid climate.
Claiming to be respon
sible only for mowing the
yard in straight lines, Paul
gives credit for the yard to
Jan. She has responded to
the challenge by complet
ing OSU Master Gardener
training two years ago and
joining the Heppner Gar
den Club for a while. She
has become familiar with,
and especially likes using,
native plants such as red
osier.
The yard was originally
mostly grass, so the Den-
lingers planted trees such
as a weeping willow and
several giveaway tamarack
starts. A green spruce by
their front gate started out
as their living Christmas
tree. An older walnut tree
provides nice shade but,
unfortunately, produces
only empty shells.
