Irrigon High student selected
as Gates Millenium Scholar
Maritriny Mejia, a
senior at Irrigon Jr./Sr. High
School, has been selected
as one of 1,000 Gates Mil
lennium Scholars for 2012.
Mejia was chosen from a
pool of 24,000 applicants
nationw ide—the largest
and most competitive group
of candidates in the pro
gram’s history.
As a Gates M il
lennium Scholar (GMS),
Mejia will receive support
for the cost of her college
education at any accredited
college or university based
on her financial need based
on the cost of tuition, fees,
books and living expenses
for the academic year, as
well as the availability of
grants and other scholar
ships. The scholarship is re
newable pending academic
progress. Should Mejia
choose to pursue a graduate
degree in the area of com
puter science, education,
engineering, library sci
ence, mathematics, public
health or science after com
pleting her undergraduate
degree, the GMS program
will help fund that as well.
Mejia also will have the
opportunity to participate
in leadership development
programs with distinctive
personal, academic and
professional growth op
t
portunities.
The GMS program,
established in 1999, was
initially funded by a $1 bil
lion grant from the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation.
Since then, 15,000 students
across the country have
been named Gates Millen
nium Scholars. To be eli-
gible. a student must have
a 3.3 unweighted GPA.
The goal of GMS
is to promote academic
excellence and to provide
an opportunity for o u t
standing minority students
with significant financial
need to reach their highest
potential.
