Help me learn about
Oregon
Dear publisher of the Heppner Gazette-Times,
I am from New Roads School. My name is Kevin
and I am in third grade. I like to watch football, and I like
playing soccer.
My class is doing a project on the 50 states. I chose
Oregon because I like watching Oregon play football on
TV and if I go up to Oregon one day I think it would be
very fun there. I wonder if it snows in Oregon.
1 am learning about Oregon in books and online
but I’d like to learn from people who live in Oregon. I
wonder if you can please send me something that will
help me learn about Oregon like pictures, newspapers,
travel brochures or letters from your readers.
Thank you for taking your time to read.
Sincerely,
Kevin

Dwight Holton for
attorney general
Featherstone the
liberal, not Hansell
As the Morrow County District Attorney, public
safety is one of my top priorities.
It is important for Oregon voters to elect an attor
ney general who will work with Oregon district attorneys
to protect the community. Prior to running for Oregon
Attorney General, Dwight Holton spent 15 years as a
United States federal prosecutor, including two years as
the United State attorney for Oregon. Mr. Holton has a
track record of successfully prosecuting gangs, drug traf
fickers and terrorists. He has helped Oregon consumers
by fighting mortgage and financial fraud. Because Dwight
has done all this as a tough federal prosecutor and as U.S.
attorney of Oregon—we can trust him to do the same as
attorney general.
My experience with Mr. Holton assures me that
he will bring an outstanding level of integrity, account
ability and transparency to the Oregon Department of
Justice. 1 encourage your vote for Dwight Holton as
Oregon’s next attorney general.

Featherstone
attacks appalling
We were appalled at the poor campaign choices
of Featherstone in Irer attack of Bill Hansell in recent
publications sent to registered voters. It was a misrepre
sentation of information and is an assault to the leadership
and community of Umatilla County, who have re-elected
Hansell into office many times over. As a strong business
woman, we expected a higher level of professionalism
from Featherstone, especially considering that there will
be a need for cooperation and collaboration long after
the election is over.
Bill Hansell stands for integrity and honesty
and always has. His campaign is about what he can do
for eastern Oregon, not about the shortcomings of his
opposition. He is committed to our region and has been
working for the betterment of our community for many
years, determined to pass it on to the next generation
in a better state. We are very proud to be members of
Mansell's camp.
Sincerely,
Deacon and Erin Heideman

Vote Featherstone
for jobs, education
As an employee of Graybeal Distributing, 1 would
like to state why I believe Maryl Featherstone is the best
candidate to represent District 29 as our state senator.
Family and caring for her employees have always been
her top priorities. I am one of many at Graybeal Distrib
uting who is the recipient of her trust and generosity at
a point in my life when I needed it the most. There are
numerous stories I've heard from employees here who
have been helped by Maryl and her husband Barry. From
employees recently retired from the military to college
students to those with an illness, to those down on their
luck, all have been given employment and the flexibility
to work the best schedule for their needs. Parents are told
to attend their children’s assemblies and other activities...
it is not an option to miss them.
I will touch on one of the major points in Maryl’s
campaign: the creation of jobs and a fight to bring trade
education back into our high schools. Jobs and education
are key points in any district and they are of the utmost
importance to her. The more jobs, the more people work
ing, the better any district becomes. All success stems
from this.
Maryl has run a profitable business for years, with
an educational background and long career in business
before returning to Pendleton to run her family’s business,
Graybeal Distributing. This is the background District 29
needs for a state senator. Believe me, Maryl will fight for
you and what is right. She will not back down and give
in to political posturing. You may not like her toughness
and tenacity, but that doesn’t matter. This is the attitude
and strength that will get the job done for you. Jobs and
education...these are her key areas of focus. Let's stick
to the issues.
Thank you,
Deborah Wagner, Pendleton, OR

To the editor:
In politics, the candidate with the most money
has the opportunity to use superior resources to define
the character of their opponent as well as paint a positive
portrait of themselves. Mitt Romney used overwhelming
financial resources to paint himself as a conservative Re
publican businessman and his opponent Rick Santorum as
an inside tax-and-spend Washington politician. Romney
is not a conservative Republican and Santorum is not a
Washington liberal politician; nevertheless, Romney’s
negative portrait of Santorum prevailed.
Maryl Featherstone has painted herself as a con
servative Republican and her opponent, Bill Hansell, as
a tax-and-spend liberal, career politician. The question
every voter must ask is, is Maryl Featherstone exhibiting
the character trait of integrity necessary for the office of
State Senator in 1) her claim to be a conservative Repub
lican and 2) her attack on the integrity and character of
Bill Hansell?
Maryl Featherstone changed her political party
affiliation to become a Republican less than eight months
ago because she knew a Democrat could not win the
state senate from District 29. Maryl Featherstone is not
a conservative Republican. Maryl Featherstone supports
abortion, a hideous practice no conservative Republican
endorses. Maryl Featherstone has never communicated
or championed the core conservative Republican values
of traditional marriage, family values or constitutional
liberty. The truth is, Maryl Featherstone has the money
to portray herself as a conservative Republican, but in
reality the public has no track record to know what Maryl
Featherstone really believes.
In contrast, Bill Hansell has been an open book
for all Oregonians to read for over 30 years of public
service. Bill Hansell has a clear record of conservative
Republican actions, deeds and positions for over three
decades. In addition, Bill Hansell has demonstrated
the core conservative values o f integrity, honesty and
forthrightness that rise above party affiliation. Maryl
Featherstone’s claim that Bill Hansell lacks integrity and
operates as a tax-and-spend politician is unsubstantiated
and below the belt, and illustrates and magnifies the core
of her character, not her opponent.
The next senator from District 29 must govern
from a standard of core conservative values that cannot
be changed for the purpose of political expediency. Bill
Hansell is the only candidate that has that core standard
of values necessary for our next senator.

Celebrate random
acts of kindness
Editor and Folks of Eastern Oregon,
On behalf of the city council of Irrigon, I would
like to invite all communities of Eastern Oregon to join
us on May 9,2012. That is the day we have designated as
the first annual RAK-Day in Irrigon. This will be a day to
do A Random Act of Kindness—hopefully—for someone
you don’t even know. As the frequency and viciousness
of violence increases in our society, we often feel nearly
helpless to stop it or slow it down. It permeates nearly
every facet of our society from computer games to movies
to social media to domestic violence to our schools.
This random act does not have to be extravagant
or expensive, either. It can be as simple as buying some
one a cup of coffee, giving someone a flower. Just stop
someone and say, “Hello, how are you today?” or compli
ment someone who does a good job or who is friendly
and kind.... Believe me, it will make you feel just as good
as the person receiving the random act. It may seem like
such a small thing to do but if enough of us join in, we
might just begin to change things a bit. So then, what are
you going to do that day?

Correction
In last week’s story,
“Storm brings rain, flood
ing,” it was incorrectly stat
ed that the Heppner sewer
plant overflow ed during
the storm. It had difficulty
keeping up with the flow
but did not overflow.
