lone track at River’s Edge

The lone team had a
great day at the R iver’s
Edge meet in Umatilla on
April 20. O f the 11 mem­
bers present, nine estab­
lished personal records
(PRs), there was one new
relay team improvement
and two had new bench­
marks for the season.
Trying out an event for
the first time was Bailey
Haguewood in the triple
jump; Bailey took a second-
place finish with a jump of
36’9”. Also trying some­
thing new was Francisco
Ramirez in the 400M; he
ran it in 1:01.94. lone boys
finished 6th of 15 teams. The
girls’ team, made up of only
four girls, placed 13°* of 17
teams.

400M, 56.47; Francisco

team also improved their
time by almost a full sec­
ond, to 47.92 seconds.
Emily Holland joins
three other 1A District 3
competitors in the top ten
in the state in javelin. She
is currently in sixth place.
Steven Holland is tied in
sixth place in the top ten in
high jump. The women’s
4x 100 relay is 10th in the top
ten in the state. Charlette
Burghard, 1500M; Bailey
Haguewood, high jump and
Evan Reitmann, long jump,
are on the fringe of entering
the top ten.
In the district, lone is
shaping up to be a con­
tender. currently holding

58 walkers join MS walk
On Saturday, April
21, 48 walkers in Heppner
and 10 walkers in Condon
walked towards a world
free of multiple sclerosis by
participating in the Eastern
Oregon Walk MS in Hep­
pner.
Walkers through­
out Eastern Oregon, Bend
and Portland raised impor­
tant funds needed to fund
research and important lo­
cal programs.
The wal ker s at
the H eppner site raised
$8,438.86 the day of the
walk. This year participants
who were unable to attend
could sign-up as virtual
walkers.

Condon got the ball rolling
and 10 people from Con­
don known as the “Condon
G als” signed-up for the
walk, raising $210.
A cheering section
headed up by M ichelle
Stone manned the rest
stops. The high school stu­
dents and Michelle’s kids
cheered the walkers on, as
well as supplying them with
bottled water—donated by
Heppner Family Foods—
and Odwalla bars donated
by one of the Oregon Chap­
ter Walk MS Sponsors—
Odwalla. The students also
helped in the kitchen and
blew up balloons with a he­
lium tank donated by John
and Nancy Gochnauer.
One of the walkers
commented that the day
co u ld n ’t have been any
better; everyone enjoyed
the event. When everyone
made it to the finish line,
w alkers and volunteers
(after they served everyone)
enjoyed a brunch headed
up by April Sykes at All

Oregon donated $100 and
fruit, Bucknum’s donated
ham and Columbia Basin
Electric donated matching
funds of $350. Hermiston
Wal-Mart also gave grant
funds totaling $1,000 to
the walk.

will be accepted until May
